roddy Posted September 14, 2003 at 01:36 PM Report Posted September 14, 2003 at 01:36 PM A couple of magazines I've been buying lately here in Beijing are 小说界 - Fictionworld, and 北京文学 - Beijing Literature I'm not sure how widely available they are in China. I find them really good. I can't understand everything by any means, but pretty much every issue has one or two short stories I can understand reasonable easily, and they're usually pretty interesting. At the moment I'm reading about a couple of villagers who get jobs guarding a gang of 'reform-through-labour' prisoners and have just finished one about a cadre who comes into work to find someone's written letters to everyone in the building accusing him of corruption - that one was a bit sneaky, it made you think he was innocent and was going to have to clear his name, but after 8 pages it pretty much says 'actually he was guilty and he killed himself on his leather sofa the end.' which was a bit disappointing. Anyone know any good sources of Chinese short stories on the internet - I find short stories really useful as you don't have to remember who all the characters are for as long as you do with a novel. skylee Posted September 14, 2003 at 11:07 PM Report Posted September 14, 2003 at 11:07 PM Duzhe (讀者) magazine is really good - full of short stories/articles. I buy one every time I go to the mainland. I believe it is sold everywhere in China. Quote
roddy Posted September 15, 2003 at 02:22 PM Author Report Posted September 15, 2003 at 02:22 PM Yeah, Duzhe is available pretty much everywhere I've been. I used to read it about a year ago when I could only handle shorter articles without my brain melting - also it carries a fair amount of translated material, and I always felt a bit daft reading something in Chinese when I could probably have found the English on the internet . . . At the moment I prefer the more substantial (8-20 pages) stories you get in the magazines I mentioned above. Roddy Quote
