I'm a big econ nerd haha...after my year in Tsinghua I'll be attending Wharton as an undergrad and plan on concentrating in econ at least now I'll have someone to talk econ with, my friends are too clueless for me to have a proper convo with .
Su-ey21 Posted August 19, 2009 at 11:27 AM Report Posted August 19, 2009 at 11:27 AM Quick question : Has anyone done their visa yet? There is an option for a single entry valid only for 3 months and a double entry visa valid for 6 months. I picked the double entry option but apparently each entry only grants me 120 days? So does that mean i have to leave the country in 120 days each time i enter? Though i wouldn't mind paying a visit to Japan or Korea....
kopfan Posted August 19, 2009 at 11:56 AM Report Posted August 19, 2009 at 11:56 AM Quick question : Has anyone done their visa yet? Su-ey21, yeap I already got my visa. I remember that at the consulate I had the option of choosing the single entry visa for 3 months and another option of a multiple entry visa (I don't remember for how many months). After choosing the multiple entry visa option I was told that those aren't granted for students. The visa person told me to just check the single entry visa for 3 months option but that they will grant me 6 months of stay (as indicated in my form that that's how long I needed to be there to study). I was a little skeptical at first, but when I got my passport back I had a single entry visa for a period of 180 days. So everything worked out . I think you can negotiate your period of stay (they probably don't have an option for everything) as long as you have proof (the Tsinghua acceptance letter) that you're there for a reason. But your idea of bouncing to Japan and Korea is also pretty cool . Hope this helps!
caffeineaddict Posted August 19, 2009 at 04:08 PM Author Report Posted August 19, 2009 at 04:08 PM I just got a multiple entry L visa with each stay max 180 days.
barron009 Posted August 20, 2009 at 07:17 PM Report Posted August 20, 2009 at 07:17 PM I'm from SoCal Los Angeles! Wow, Rutgers..congrats...isn't that in New Jersey? LA, excellent. I was there a few weeks ago. Yep, I went all the way to New Jersey for college. It was great being on the East Coast for 4 years and New York City is about a 1 hour train ride away.I just graduated from Rutgers with a BA in English and Visual Arts! Haha small world! That's awesome!! I'm a big econ nerd haha...after my year in Tsinghua I'll be attending Wharton as an undergrad and plan on concentrating in econ at least now I'll have someone to talk econ with, my friends are too clueless for me to have a proper convo with . Sounds good . Congrats on Wharton, that's a great school. I was hoping to get a double entry but the woman at the consulate told me I'd have to leave after 90 days and come back. I was hoping to have a bit more flexibility on when I could leave. I ended up settling for an 180 day F single entry. There will be time after the first semester to travel abroad.
susie10216 Posted August 24, 2009 at 02:56 AM Report Posted August 24, 2009 at 02:56 AM what?????????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!! Caffeinaddict : you got multiple entry?????????????!!!!! This is unbelievable. I tried to negotiate with them that I need a multiple entry but the chinese embassy people wouldnt budge. This is so not fair. I am stuck in China for the entire course. Not fair, not fair!!!! SUsie

minski Posted August 24, 2009 at 12:26 PM Report Posted August 24, 2009 at 12:26 PM Hi all, I am in Beijing now.I went to the university today and got my room.It is really small but tidy. The Uni is quite big, without bicycle it's impossible to go around the campus. It's nice. And it's quite hot here.
kopfan Posted August 24, 2009 at 02:14 PM Report Posted August 24, 2009 at 02:14 PM Hey Minski!! Must one get a bike to get around?? I seriously suck at biking and was hoping to walk my way around campus...let me know whether i should start up on my biking again cause it's been a while
minski Posted August 24, 2009 at 02:50 PM Report Posted August 24, 2009 at 02:50 PM Hey kopfan, it is the same for me,I am a senior member of the clumsy class, but this is my opinion. You can find it easy to walk, I only passed through the main building to the dormitory and was enough ))Here everybody ride a bike, maybe it is our time to "shine"...))
caffeineaddict Posted August 24, 2009 at 07:15 PM Author Report Posted August 24, 2009 at 07:15 PM lol yep I got multiple entry. Then again I am Chinese and I played the "going to visit my homeland" card . Plus the guy at the visa centre was really nice. I am also really rubbish at biking. In fact I haven't gotten on a bike since I was 12 so that's....10 years ago! The traffic in beijing is really dangerous for bike riders b/c nobody follows any rules! I will probably be the one going reeeeallly slowly and pissing everyone else off
luanova Posted August 25, 2009 at 07:40 AM Report Posted August 25, 2009 at 07:40 AM I plan on only biking inside the campus, because I don't plan on dying at age 22. Minski: I thought you don't get your room until September! Are you living in a single or AB?
Su-ey21 Posted August 25, 2009 at 08:08 AM Report Posted August 25, 2009 at 08:08 AM what?????????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!Caffeinaddict : you got multiple entry?????????????!!!!! This is unbelievable. I tried to negotiate with them that I need a multiple entry but the chinese embassy people wouldnt budge. This is so not fair. I am stuck in China for the entire course. Not fair, not fair!!!! SUsie Yea i just got my visa back and it's a single entry F visa valid for 180 days But it was super cheap! Like 20 times cheaper than getting a UK visa I wanted to visit Taiwan... Me too! I wanted to overload myself with super tasty bubble tea.. but i guess the traveling can come after the course? Or i think it's possible to apply for another entry if you want to leave and return again. I plan on only biking inside the campus, because I don't plan on dying at age 22. Me too, me too. I am terrified of getting run down since the last time i went i couldn't even cross their roads! I heard though that it is still really nice to bike around the campus, apparently there are little waterfalls and nice greenery? I sure hope that's true.
marco-polo Posted August 26, 2009 at 10:13 PM Report Posted August 26, 2009 at 10:13 PM A question for Miski or anyone else who has already moved into the dorms: what kind of connectors do the TV's in the dorm rooms have? From the picture on the web site, it looks like they take standard RCA plugs for composite video and audio (i.e. yellow, red and white), but I can't be sure. I wonder if there are any other connections around the back of the TV? Thanks to anyone who can advise.
kopfan Posted August 27, 2009 at 03:04 PM Report Posted August 27, 2009 at 03:04 PM I have a feeling I'm just gonna have to set aside an extra 15 minute before heading anywhere and power walk it...really don't want to start biking again lol...and yeah i hear our campus is really nice too. Shouldn't be too bad for a stroll assuming the pollution in Beijing has lightened up and yay to bubble tea!!! I'm sure they have that in China too but the ones in Taiwan are awesome!!!
caffeineaddict Posted August 27, 2009 at 08:14 PM Author Report Posted August 27, 2009 at 08:14 PM Does anyone know more about the bus that runs around campus? I read somewhere that it also goes to the metro station??
sweet&sour Posted August 28, 2009 at 10:04 AM Report Posted August 28, 2009 at 10:04 AM hello everybody, I am also 22 years and I am also heading to Beijing. oh man we have so much in common I am an undergraduate and I will study Economics at the Tsinghua. I have already spend one year in China before. My flight is already going on monday. I am so excited. I will travel a little before class starts. I am searching for an apartment right now. Are all of you gonna go into the dorm? To live off campus has many advantages. There are many very nice flats around the campus. They re pretty cheap too. Especially if ur sharing a flat. Like a completely furnished 3 bedroom apartment in wudaokou, which right next to the university cost like 5000 - 7000 RMB per month. Per head it would be cheaper than in the dorm and you have your own bedroom and you can invite friends when ever and as long as you want. When I am arriving in Beijing I will make some appointments to see some of those appartments. there are also some nice 1 bedroom appartment but I acctually would rather have some housemates. So if anybody is interested to maybe share an appartment let me know. If you have the time u could check some of them out. http://en.ganji.com/housing/apartments-for-rent/ I am looking forward to meet all you guys. greetz
