Will Morrison Posted August 8, 2009 at 10:07 PM Report Posted August 8, 2009 at 10:07 PM Hey Everybody, I am having a difficult time finding Anki flashcards for anything other than basic Chinese courses. I recently finished the 2nd year Chinese course using "A New China" and I've spent numerous hours typing in the vocubulary words. (please let me know if you need these and I'll be glad to send you the file) I am now moving on to 3rd year Chinese and I would like to find an Anki file for the books "All Things Considered" and "Newspaper Readings". If you have these files for the Window's based Anki flashcards please let me know. If no one has this file or knows where to download this file, I would like to find others to work on creating an Anki file for the "All Things Considered" and "Newspaper Readings" vocab words. Depending on how many people respond to this email, we could each type a few chapters. Please respond if you know where to download the file or if you would like to work together to create one! Thanks, Will Quote
Radial Posted August 9, 2009 at 05:30 AM Report Posted August 9, 2009 at 05:30 AM I find it best to create your own. I have started using a pen scanner to get phrases and definitions in quickly. You can also join smart.fm and down load some of their lists into Anki... or use their format. Hope this helps. Quote

Scoobyqueen Posted August 9, 2009 at 02:40 PM Report Posted August 9, 2009 at 02:40 PM Newspaper Readings Is that the name of the book? I have got "Learning about China from newspapers" 报刊阅读基础 and have entered a lot of the terms. I actually think you learn a lot from entering the terms yourself or at least I do. Quote
Will Morrison Posted August 9, 2009 at 04:57 PM Author Report Posted August 9, 2009 at 04:57 PM The official title of the book is "Newspaper Readings: The USA in the People's Daily" . I've often heard people say that its beneficial to "make" flashcards, but I've spent 40 -50 hours entering vocabulary flashcards for "A New China" and its hard for me to believe that that time was better spent than if I had been writing the characters and studying them on Anki. (By the way, once I finish entering the last 4 chapters of A New China I'll upload them to this message board) I've also checked the Smart.FM site and there is nothing of substance above the beginner level. Thanks for the suggestion though... Let me know if anyone wants to work together on creating an Anki file for "All Things Considered" !!!! Quote
Will Morrison Posted November 11, 2009 at 07:40 PM Author Report Posted November 11, 2009 at 07:40 PM Sorry it took so long for me to post the file. Attached is the complete Anki flashcards for the textbook, A New China. I've attended both the FALCON program at Cornell and the Center for Language Studies program at Beloit College, both schools use this book for second year Chinese. (Its a Princeton book, so obviously they use it at the PIB program) If anyone creates an Anki file for either the All Things Considered or Newspaper Readings: The U.S.A. in The People's Daily (3rd year Chinese books) or Anything Goes (4th year Chinese book), please let me know. Even if you just get started and enter a few chapters, anything you can share would be much appreciated!!! Will A New China October 22.zip Quote
knadolny Posted November 15, 2009 at 11:09 PM Report Posted November 15, 2009 at 11:09 PM A New China. I've attended both the FALCON program at Cornell Will, if only I had these files when I was using A New China at Cornell. I was using this book in 2002-03. I made the flashcards by writing them down on note cards. That was a nightmare and I agree it's not the most efficient way of learning Chinese. Using the flashcards is the most important part. I'm considering making flashcards for my book on Lu Xun. Can I ask a few questions? I was planning on making the flashcards PDF printable on note cards. Is Anki a much more efficient tool nowadays? Obviously I'm a bit behind on the technology. Also would people be willing to pay a low rate for flashcards? If yes, you could always try to contact some of the publishers such as the one at Princeton to make them available. The might be willing to do them, and if there is a profit incentive the might be more open to it. If no, I would be worried about people using the flashcards without buying my book. I've put a lot of time into the book so am hesitant to do such a thing and believe other authors might feel the same. Thanks for reading, Kevin Quote
renzhe Posted November 15, 2009 at 11:14 PM Report Posted November 15, 2009 at 11:14 PM I was planning on making the flashcards PDF printable on note cards. Is Anki a much more efficient tool nowadays? Yes. Especially when you get to thousands of flashcards. Quote
roddy Posted November 15, 2009 at 11:26 PM Report Posted November 15, 2009 at 11:26 PM Once you've got the flashcard files set up, adding a 'Print PDF' option probably isn't much trouble so it might be worth having for those who want it. There are still plenty of low-tech learners around who would appreciate it, I think. However, paper flashcards just aren't that easy to work with in my experience - you really want card. Quote
knadolny Posted November 16, 2009 at 03:04 AM Report Posted November 16, 2009 at 03:04 AM (edited) Especially when you get to thousands of flashcards. I couldn't agree more. I had drawers full of them. Maybe I should ask my question another way. Is ASKI the best format to use? Or would you recommend Pleco or the Mnemosyne Project? http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/2-favourite-chinese-musician7863 paper flashcards just aren't that easy to work with in my experience Great point.
