Can anyone offer a good translation of 一损俱损. The dictionary definitions were not not that helpful. This is the context:

形成一损俱损的局面

I presume 俱 is fourth tone. Is this always the case?

The translation is quite difficult to me, because there is no more context at this moment.

I have a try:

形成一损俱损的局面 to evolve into a situation where the others will be subject to loss or damage if one is attacked or damaged.

俱 jù you were right when you said that. hehe

Apologies. I should have provided the whole context:

黑尔曼教授认为,中美经济的相互依存性已经将这两大经济体捆绑在一起,形成一损俱损的局面。

One loses, they all lose

黑尔曼教授认为,中美经济的相互依存性已经将这两大经济体捆绑在一起,形成一损俱损的局面。

Professor Hellmann believes that the interdependence of Sino – U.S. economy has bundled the two economies together, and a situation has thus formed in which either economy, once affected, will lead to damage of the other.

I'm truly impressed! This is a professional translation !!!

I've known 一损俱损 as one failure leads to another, but seeing it in Scoobyqueen's sentence, my initial impulse would have been to translate the phrase as 'domino effect' (??)

Kenny2006woo, could you pls 指教 whether this option is also possible in some contexts? Thank you ^^

Me too.

I also like the domino effect as a suggestion by the way. That's actually very creative!

I'd say you need more than two dominoes for a domino effect. Knock-on effect, maybe.

This looks like the original interview.

It should be added that 一损俱损 and domino effect are different in two ways. First in number, you have to have at least three dominos to cause a domino effect while in 一损俱损 two ones are enough. What is more important is that in 一损俱损 loss or damage of any :wink:one will lead to the loss or damage of ALL THE REST, to have the SAME EFFECT in domino games, the starter has to be the first one or the last one. In addition, 损means attacked or damaged or loss.
