Can anyone offer a good translation of 一损俱损. The dictionary definitions were not not that helpful. This is the context:

形成一损俱损的局面

I presume 俱 is fourth tone. Is this always the case?

I've known 一损俱损 as one failure leads to another, but seeing it in Scoobyqueen's sentence, my initial impulse would have been to translate the phrase as 'domino effect' (??)

"Domino effect" can sometimes be an option. It depends on the context.

I'd say you need more than two dominoes for a domino effect. Knock-on effect, maybe.

It should be added that 一损俱损 and domino effect are different in two ways. First in number, you have to have at least three dominos to cause a domino effect while in 一损俱损 two ones are enough. What is more important is that in 一损俱损 loss or damage of any :wink:one will lead to the loss or damage of ALL THE REST, to have the SAME EFFECT in domino games, the starter has to be the first one or the last one. In addition, 损means attacked or damaged or loss.
