Scoobyqueen Posted August 17, 2009 at 11:46 AM Report Posted August 17, 2009 at 11:46 AM Yes, my girlfriend never takes me shopping in China for that reason. There are other good reasons for not taking men shopping Quote
caffeineaddict Posted August 17, 2009 at 05:06 PM Report Posted August 17, 2009 at 05:06 PM I guess the idea here is "when in Rome do as the Romans believe they do" I think people need to let go of their whole idea that China operates under fundamentally different ideas because at the end of the day I strongly believe that people everywhere are pretty similar. (I'm not talking about business customs or whatever). So for example what you typed up above I can totally see happening in China or as you designate "here". But flip it around and to be honest it happens in the UK as well. It's not a big deal or anything and I don't mean to offend. It's just that I'm honestly puzzled when I see people explaining how some things are just different "here" or "there" when I think wait a sec isn't that a universal human trait? That being said I personally think it's really rude to make fun of anyone's accent. I would never do it to unless it was one of my closest friends and they accidentally swore or something. I do get mocked by my British friends for having an "American" accent and sounding like a valley girl (even though I'm not even American). It's okay in jest but in everyday life no way. Quote
abcdefg Posted August 18, 2009 at 02:04 AM Report Posted August 18, 2009 at 02:04 AM When Chinese people mock my accent here in China, I share the laugh with them. Goodness knows my accent is pretty pronounced and laughable at times. Rather than becoming incensed, I currently take it as a sign of social acceptance that they feel comfortable enough with me to make a joke of how I speak. My response may change over time and I may not feel the same two or three years from now. Quote
