Do you feel bad when people mimic your Chinese accent?

Yes, my girlfriend never takes me shopping in China for that reason.

There are other good reasons for not taking men shopping

I guess the idea here is "when in Rome do as the Romans believe they do"

I think people need to let go of their whole idea that China operates under fundamentally different ideas because at the end of the day I strongly believe that people everywhere are pretty similar. (I'm not talking about business customs or whatever). So for example what you typed up above I can totally see happening in China or as you designate "here". But flip it around and to be honest it happens in the UK as well. It's not a big deal or anything and I don't mean to offend. It's just that I'm honestly puzzled when I see people explaining how some things are just different "here" or "there" when I think wait a sec isn't that a universal human trait?

That being said I personally think it's really rude to make fun of anyone's accent. I would never do it to unless it was one of my closest friends and they accidentally swore or something. I do get mocked by my British friends for having an "American" accent and sounding like a valley girl (even though I'm not even American). It's okay in jest but in everyday life no way.

When Chinese people mock my accent here in China, I share the laugh with them. Goodness knows my accent is pretty pronounced and laughable at times. Rather than becoming incensed, I currently take it as a sign of social acceptance that they feel comfortable enough with me to make a joke of how I speak. My response may change over time and I may not feel the same two or three years from now.
