roddy Posted August 17, 2009 at 07:26 AM Report Posted August 17, 2009 at 07:26 AM I came across this randomly, and as I'd never heard of it before I felt driven to ask if this is actually a Chinese thing that Chinese people actually do and believe in, or if it's one of those Chinese things that us foreigners have invented (like all those ancient Chinese proverbs that can never actually be matched up with anything in Chinese). So, did Chinese people ever actually attempt to predict (and therefore control) the gender of their children by working out birth months and mother's lunar ages and all that? Quote
muyongshi Posted August 17, 2009 at 07:34 AM Report Posted August 17, 2009 at 07:34 AM None of my friends that were trying to have kids ever mentioned it. My guess is that they didn't know it existed. Very interesting though... Quote
Kenny同志 Posted August 17, 2009 at 08:33 AM Report Posted August 17, 2009 at 08:33 AM It did exist in ancient China but now I am afraid very few practise this. It may exists in some remote or underdeveloped areas but I believe few practise this even in those areas. Quote
roddy Posted August 17, 2009 at 08:37 AM Author Report Posted August 17, 2009 at 08:37 AM What's it called in Chinese? I had a look at some 'how to have sons' pages but didn't find reference to anything that seemed relevant. Quote
Kenny同志 Posted August 17, 2009 at 09:00 AM Report Posted August 17, 2009 at 09:00 AM Some might call it 生男生女诀窍 or 生男生女秘诀。 Quote
roddy Posted August 17, 2009 at 09:03 AM Author Report Posted August 17, 2009 at 09:03 AM But for this specific calendar method? There must be something online if it exists, lets have a link to look at . . . Quote
Kenny同志 Posted August 17, 2009 at 09:20 AM Report Posted August 17, 2009 at 09:20 AM I am sorry, Roddy. I once came across this sort of material, but it was a very long time ago. And I cannot recall the specific name of it or I am not sure whether it has a specific name or not. It should be added that the "gender calendar" is generally regarded superstitious and not seriously taken. Quote
Outofin Posted August 17, 2009 at 02:07 PM Report Posted August 17, 2009 at 02:07 PM Yes, it's Chinese. You can search with keyword 清宫图 and 男女. I don't believe it's scientific. My sister used it and it happened to be "accurate". Quote
roddy Posted August 17, 2009 at 02:11 PM Author Report Posted August 17, 2009 at 02:11 PM Wahey, the Chinese gender calendar exists. Thanks, Outofin. So according to this, if you get pregnant when you're 21, you've only got a 1/12 chance of having a boy; while the full three years from 30-32 . . . ah, it's a load of nonsense anyway. Quote
muyongshi Posted August 17, 2009 at 04:58 PM Report Posted August 17, 2009 at 04:58 PM I think we should get a few people to run some tests on it Quote
WangYuHong Posted August 17, 2009 at 07:56 PM Report Posted August 17, 2009 at 07:56 PM Didn't work for me! How do I go about getting my money back? Quote
HashiriKata Posted August 17, 2009 at 09:13 PM Report Posted August 17, 2009 at 09:13 PM I think we should get a few people to run some tests on it Who have you got in mind? Quote
muyongshi Posted August 18, 2009 at 01:08 AM Report Posted August 18, 2009 at 01:08 AM Well obviously it must be on a volunteer basis due to the fact that a lifetime commitment of a child would be involved. So pretty much anyone who wants- if I had a GF and was looking at marriage I might volunteer. How about you Hashirikata? Are you volunteering... oh and i wonder since Roddy found it, if he is tacetly required to participate??? Quote
gougou Posted August 18, 2009 at 02:46 PM Report Posted August 18, 2009 at 02:46 PM i wonder since Roddy found it, if he is tacetly required to participateIt's not his finding it that would make me wonder so much as his looking for it... Quote
muyongshi Posted August 18, 2009 at 03:28 PM Report Posted August 18, 2009 at 03:28 PM VERY good point. Quote
