roddy Posted August 17, 2009 at 12:28 PM Report Posted August 17, 2009 at 12:28 PM For the best part of the day I haven't been able to connect to MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, and most unusually Witopia. I held off on posting while I was out in a cafe as cafe Internet often isn't the best, but I'm home now and they're still not working. Beijing Netcom (or whatever it is). Anyone else? MSN does stop working sometime, but not usually for this long. I thought for a moment they'd maybe blocked IM, but Skype seems fine. Quote
self-taught-mba Posted August 17, 2009 at 01:15 PM Report Posted August 17, 2009 at 01:15 PM Same here at least a few sites like yahoo and others. Now down. Seems slow also. Quote
roddy Posted August 17, 2009 at 01:46 PM Author Report Posted August 17, 2009 at 01:46 PM Was just speaking to someone else having the same problems. If you have witopia, set your gateway to Manchester and things start working again. Seems like there some kind of obstacle between China and parts of the Internet. Apparently the opendns servers are also suffering, so if you use those . . . you probably can't even read this. Quote
Marco Posted August 17, 2009 at 02:13 PM Report Posted August 17, 2009 at 02:13 PM Accoording to 163.com a cable in the sea near korea has broken so there are some problems for the mainland cheers Quote
roddy Posted August 17, 2009 at 02:18 PM Author Report Posted August 17, 2009 at 02:18 PM Right enough. Pesky cables. Quote
sthubbar Posted August 17, 2009 at 04:17 PM Report Posted August 17, 2009 at 04:17 PM Thanks for finding the cause of these problems. I have been experiencing the same thing. BTW, I did some research and it appears that the 38.100.141.140/141 Witopia servers provide reliable and low packet loss connection. Even better than the UK servers. Quote
xiexieniii Posted August 18, 2009 at 07:31 AM Report Posted August 18, 2009 at 07:31 AM Can't access Yahoo, MSN, or thebeijinger.com from my house. My Anchor Shield proxy thing isn't able to connect, either. However Google, Gmail, and Wikipedia are as as fast as ever. I'm about to go to Starbucks and see if things are the same over there. Quote
Jim Posted August 18, 2009 at 01:39 PM Report Posted August 18, 2009 at 01:39 PM Noticed the same - recently installed the alpha release of the forthcoming Ubuntu Linux version and connecting to servers for updates has been appalling. Same with a few regularly visited UK-based sites. Quote
self-taught-mba Posted August 20, 2009 at 03:11 PM Report Posted August 20, 2009 at 03:11 PM It is sooooooo slow right now. I would add in a few more "o"s, but I'm afraid it won't upload. Quote
gougou Posted August 21, 2009 at 01:03 AM Report Posted August 21, 2009 at 01:03 AM I think so too. They say they're repairing it, but it seems to be getting worse. Quote
phyrex Posted August 21, 2009 at 01:58 AM Report Posted August 21, 2009 at 01:58 AM Glad to read that I'm not the only one with that problem ^^ Has anyone seen any estimate on when they'll have it fixed? Quote
roddy Posted August 21, 2009 at 02:33 AM Author Report Posted August 21, 2009 at 02:33 AM According to this it's going to take 一定时间, which isn't much help. More (Chinese) info here. I've just got the VPN on all the time now. Quote
dalaowai Posted August 21, 2009 at 05:27 AM Report Posted August 21, 2009 at 05:27 AM At the other end of the world, Chinese website are all loading extremely slowly in Canada I'm guessing due to the same cabling issues. Quote
Jones03 Posted August 21, 2009 at 12:53 PM Report Posted August 21, 2009 at 12:53 PM I can't contact my friends in Hangzhou on Tencent messenger... Just saw someone logging on and off again like 10 times in a row. Quote
self-taught-mba Posted August 26, 2009 at 07:47 AM Report Posted August 26, 2009 at 07:47 AM (edited) My gosh! the Internet is so slow right now that I can't even load Gmail standard. I found a site that test your Internet connection here within China. That way you can see how slow it is going without the firewall effects. Most other bandwidth tests are outside of the mainland.
