Graffiti in Beijing - Silence

Has anyone else noticed graffiti along the lines of that attached - the word 'silence' with the two arrows at either end - appearing anywhere in Beijing. I can't remember when I first noticed it, but I'm sure it's years back, and it's geographically spread out enough that it's either more than one person doing it, or one person making an effort to get out and about.

Any ideas on any significance? I had a quick search to see if I could find any reference to it online, but no luck. These two are pretty simple, but I've seen more elaborate, coloured-in block letters versions.

I'm not there now, but no I never noticed it before. Noticed all the phone numbers of course, which were explained to me as some kind of black market rackateers.

This looks like some kind of 12 Monkey's shit going on, if you can remember the movie which is a fave of mine.

I love graffiti but hate tagging, which is what this looks like. It takes no skill. I should know, I used to do it 25 years ago ;)

I never paid attention to it before, but I've seen it twice since you posted this thread.

Also, there was an article about graffiti in Beijing on AFP two days ago (it doesn't talk about the "Silence" though, nor about much else of interest really).
