Trying to lose a little weight I have taken to using sweetener in my coffee lately, instead of sugar. However, finding out how to ask for "sweetener" in Chinese turned out more difficult than expected !?

I must have come across something like half a dozen different words for it so far, but whichever one I try I am never understood (and I'm pretty sure it's not a tone or pronunciation issue).

Here are a few of the variants I've run across so far:

糖精 - from a waiter at a restaurant

甜味剂 - from an electronic pocket dictionary

怡口糖 - printed on a small dosage bag of sweetener that I got somewhere

代糖 - from someone I asked in China, also found in an on-line dictonary

甜味儿佐料 - from an example sentence in an on-line dictionary

Can anyone tell me a word, or a brief and snappy expression I can use for "sweetener" (as in sugar substitute) that will be generally understood in restaurants and similar situations ? Is this even possible, or will it depend on which region they come from ?

There seems to also be

You could also try

or

which are the chemical name Aspartame for this
