vinhlong Posted July 30, 2004 at 08:31 AM Report Posted July 30, 2004 at 08:31 AM Hi, I'm making a wood carving for a friend of mine, and I'd like inscribe it with the following text in both Chinese as Vietnamese: "To uncle Danh, because true friendship lasts forever" Can anybody help me? Quote
skylee Posted July 30, 2004 at 10:28 AM Report Posted July 30, 2004 at 10:28 AM In Chinese, consider "友誼永固". I don't know about the name and Vietnamese, though. Quote
nnt Posted July 31, 2004 at 06:53 AM Report Posted July 31, 2004 at 06:53 AM The character for Danh is 名. "Uncle" is rather ambiguous. And if he is actually related to you (original meaning of uncle), I wouldn't use the term "friendship". Besides, 友誼 seems to have a rather diplomatic connotation . Here "thâm giao" 深交 may be better. vinhlong Posted August 3, 2004 at 03:17 PM Author Report Posted August 3, 2004 at 03:17 PM Thanx for the info. He's not actually related. I call him uncle, partly because he's the uncle of a close friend of mine, partly because I feel it's the polite way to address him. Which term for uncle should I use? How would the rest of the characters be translated in Vietnamese? Thanks in advance. Quote
nnt Posted August 4, 2004 at 08:39 AM Report Posted August 4, 2004 at 08:39 AM Thâm giao vĩnh cố : 深交永固 or: Thâm giao vĩnh hằng : 深交永恆 Skylee's expression is very much used too: http://chinese.greetings.yahoo.com/browse/_Wishes_and_Thoughts/__Friendship/ Danh thúc thúc : 名叔叔 : chú Danh Danh bá bá : 名伯伯 : bác Danh Quote
vinhlong Posted August 4, 2004 at 09:40 AM Author Report Posted August 4, 2004 at 09:40 AM Thank you very much! Why does 友誼 seems to have a rather diplomatic connotation? Quote
nnt Posted August 4, 2004 at 10:50 AM Report Posted August 4, 2004 at 10:50 AM hữu nghị 友誼 Very much used in expressions like "friendship between the people of xxx and the people of yyy". Quote
