Hofmann Posted August 23, 2009 at 04:12 PM Report Share Posted August 23, 2009 at 04:12 PM It looks like 楽, the Japanese variant of 樂, missing 2 strokes.
bjawnie Posted August 23, 2009 at 05:21 PM Author Report Share Posted August 23, 2009 at 05:21 PM Excellent guys. I searched a little for Raku and found that it can also refer to Raku ware, a form of japanese pottery http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raku_ware I am quite certain thats the case here. Thank you very much both of you.
leeyah Posted August 23, 2009 at 05:22 PM Report Share Posted August 23, 2009 at 05:22 PM Right, it's the Japanese character 楽 (raku/gaku) with two strokes omitted & written in very poor calligraphy And here's a nice definition of the meaning of the character: Sipping white [白] wine under a tree [木] is comfortable
Hofmann Posted August 23, 2009 at 08:18 PM Report Share Posted August 23, 2009 at 08:18 PM The things the Japanese make up in order to remember characters... 樂 is a picture of drums (糸白糸) on a stand (木). 說文解字: 五聲八音總名象鼓鞞木虡也
