Canon Posted August 25, 2009 at 02:34 AM Report Posted August 25, 2009 at 02:34 AM Hello All, I am currently trying to apply independently to either Tsinghua or Beida for its mandarin training programs starting Feb 2010. I've currently done 3 months of prior mandarin in China and speak a dialect of chinese. I realise my questions have have already been dealt with in this forum but any help would be appreciated. Im trying to apply to Tsinghua independently and ive been told by their office I cant. From my knowledge I have to apply though independent companies such as MCP and beijing orange, but id really rather not. However if I do, will the teachers still be from Tsinghua or are they just using the campus and nothing else? My plan is to do 1 semester on a normal class and try to apply for the IUP in the 2nd. Also it looks like oicr for peking u does accept individual students but they dont have single rooms in their dorms. What are the alternatives for lodging. And also which program has been better received from students in the past? Any info would do, thanks so much everyone. Quote

Canon Posted August 25, 2009 at 03:22 AM Author Report Posted August 25, 2009 at 03:22 AM Thanks Fanglu but i think that application is for courses at tsinghua not for the mandarin learning course? I called up their office and they told me I couldn't. Is this how you applied last time and you entered the mandarin course for foreign students? THanks! Quote
gato Posted August 25, 2009 at 03:29 AM Report Posted August 25, 2009 at 03:29 AM Isn't the application procedure here? http://intlstudent.cic.tsinghua.edu.cn/EN/admission/admission-chinese-2009.html Quote
fanglu Posted August 25, 2009 at 03:31 AM Report Posted August 25, 2009 at 03:31 AM I have never studied there but it seems clear from their website that you can apply yourself. I have never head of a Chinese university requiring you to use an agent. Quote

Canon Posted August 25, 2009 at 05:12 AM Author Report Posted August 25, 2009 at 05:12 AM thakns guys, yes i called the number that was posted and it doesnt open yet. Opens in october. I must have misheard the lady before, maybe she meant it wasn't open yet. Just for reference does anyone have any insights on which is better, Tsinghua or Beida? for mandarin instruction? Quote
caffeineaddict Posted August 27, 2009 at 05:44 AM Report Posted August 27, 2009 at 05:44 AM You can definitely apply for the course independently. That's the route I took and I will be starting the program at Tsinghua this September. Re: Tsinghua vs. Beida...to be honest I really don't know. After doing some digging on these forums and contacting two students (one at either uni) they still seemed pretty similar. So I chose the one that replied to me first. Quote
imron Posted August 27, 2009 at 06:08 AM Report Posted August 27, 2009 at 06:08 AM Also realise that in China, and especially when dealing with bureaucracy, and especially when talking to someone whose job doesn't deal with your problem (you mentioned when calling the number it wasn't open yet) sometimes people will answer with "no" rather than "I don't know", or "I'm only going to say it's possible to do X, because I can't be bothered answering all your questions about Y". I can't offer insights about Mandarin instruction but I expect it will be much of a muchness. I can say however that I like Tsinghua's campus better than Beida's. Tsinghua is also located closer to the center of Wudaokou and the train line etc. Quote
