querido Posted August 26, 2009 at 05:31 PM Report Posted August 26, 2009 at 05:31 PM (edited) While trying some new media players looking for something unrelated, I just noticed that smplayer (multiplatform gui frontend for mplayer) features a configurable amount of time skipped by the <> arrows and the mousewheel (options...preferences...interface...seeking). Set for 1 to 5 seconds or so, this is very convenient for digging in. **Here's the idea: you get almost-smooth slewing of audio and video, without having to look at or deal with a live progress bar; concentrating fully, I can still push <.** (Every media player has some problem. The only one I see with smplayer is that DVD menus look rough, but can be reloaded with shift+enter, and work perfectly. (Correction: only one of my DVD's menus looks rough- the one I was looking at!) The playlist window is separable for some reason, but it will go back and stay if dragged over the main window. Note that it will go on top, bottom, or side.) One more thing: This thing offers speed adjustments with or without a change in pitch ([=slower, ]=faster, bksp=normal). I think allowing the change in pitch works a little better, but really can't be pushed far enough to matter. Audacity has this feature too. PhilipLean Posted August 29, 2009 at 10:38 PM Report Posted August 29, 2009 at 10:38 PM Thanks, SMPlayer is proving very useful. I just figured out how to set the jump timing / (skip distance), see the attached screenshot. I really like the fact that SMPlayer seems to have only a minimal call on my system's resources. Quote
