According to this page, the first character is zé, whereas according to this page, it is zhĕ, and my paper dictionary which is usually quite good for obscure characters doesn't seem to contain it at all.

Any ideas?

According to the first page, it's probably supposed to be written: 啫喱.

I'd go with the first page as 百度知道 answers tend to be answered by whatever someone thinks (whether they are correct or not) rather than whether or not something is correct. This can be fine for many questions, but it does mean you need to look at everything there with a critical eye. Baidu (which lists pronunciation for rare characters when you search for them) supports the pronunciation zé.

Is that term used in Mandarin / Putonghua at all? I only know it as a Cantonese word

Like many words used in Mandarin, it probably originated in Cantonese and crept informally into Mandarin usage.

Anyway, my Mandarin-speaking friends use this word (albeit infrequently) and seem to pronounce it as zhe li (not sure about the tones though).
