eslteacher007 Posted September 8, 2009 at 05:50 AM Report Posted September 8, 2009 at 05:50 AM Hey All, I’m pretty new to China and new to teaching. And the problems don’t stop there. My school has practically no resources and I am expected to teach with what they give me. I’ve found a few great free sites for kids: http://www.eslkingdom.com, bogglesworldesl.com and www.eslhq.com. But all the sites with adult related material (especially for business English) I’ve found are not great, any recommendations??? Thanks. Quote
Senzhi Posted September 8, 2009 at 04:41 PM Report Posted September 8, 2009 at 04:41 PM I used the "Business Explorer" series from Cambridge University Press: http://www.cambridge.org/catalogue/searchResult.asp They do not only focus on (American) English, but also on international business culture. Useful free online resources are rare for this specific kind of education, as many people seem to understand that "business English" is only about English business terminology. If you have international business experience, you could focus on teaching your own experiences (cultural differences in doing business). Adult students are usually not only interested in the language, but more in the "how" of conducting business with foreigners ... as most of them do find this a real challenge. Focus on things like business calls (think call centre), marketing, sales, conducting meetings, negotiations, negations, setting up contracts, e-business, etc. So expect to do some facilitation instead of purely teaching, by presenting them some study cases, based on your real life international business experience. At least ... that's what I did, and it proved extremely succesful. Quote

PhilipLean Posted September 16, 2009 at 04:25 PM Report Posted September 16, 2009 at 04:25 PM English Pod - online and downloadable http://englishpod.com/ even the basic subscription provides a lot Plus if you use a podcast receiver like Juice you can grab many hours of lessons during your trial period. The sources below are for good quality free stuff. The BBC language site has some great stuff for people learning English. many levels. From China - China Daily, Special Speed news, text and audio - mainly VOA articles read slowly For pronunciation of English words - Dict.CN (American accent) and howjsay.com UK accent - these are very useful for convincing people how words are spoken in English - such as "usually" actually sounds like "uzhually" not "urrally" as often taught in China. Absolute Beginner English - 20 Point Program Learn English online - lots of good stuff for beginners This one looks useful but I have not explored properly English Club : Learn English : Business English Actually the whole site looks interesting.
