Tones "correct" in this clip?

Just stumbled across this video on youtube. it is a teacher speaking to a beginner. I was just wondering if her tone when saying 办公室 doesnt sound like a pronounced second tone for 室. If so, is she Chinese do you think?

Sometimes I come across news readers who pronounce道 in 报道 with a third sounding tone. I was told this was typical of Taiwan, Hong Kong and overseas Chinese. Are there any other common words that are pronounced differently?

Nevermind. I have seen a textbook list shi2 as one pronunciation along with shi4. Maybe it's one of these.

Thanks for the reference thread which makes for an interesting read.

I do think it is important to use the right tones when teaching beginners though. Beyond a certain level it is not so much of an issue.

She's pronouncing it with 3rd tone. It's quite common usage, especially in Beijing (in fact it's far more common than the correct 4th tone).

In HK, the word is usually written as 報導 in the traditional script. And 報導 = 報道. It is not just a different pronunciation.

I wouldn't be surprised to see ordinary Chinese speakers mixing up 报道 and 报导.

Try and listen to http://www.radioaustralia.net.au/chinese/articles/s2683611.htm first sentence spoken and see what you make of 道。sounds like medium thing between fourth and third. I raised this particular point on another thread and a Chinese responded as I put it above.

It sounds to me very clearly like they are saying 时事报导, although in the transcript it says 时事报道

Imron - i cant imagine that the script is wrong as they put the same intro every day but they change the name of the speaker. A Chinese guy here on the Forums told me it was because overseas Chinese would often pronounce it like that.

They are saying 时事报导 for sure, as I hear it.

The thing is 报导 is somewhat obsolete in written form in China. People tend to write it 报道, but the pronunciation of 报导 is still very common.

Actually I imagine it's quite an easy mistake to make if the person preparing the transcripts has grown up with Traditional characters but they are typing out Simplified. Compare the traditional version of 导 (導) with 道. That person types shishibaodao in their simplified chinese pinyin IME and the first choice that pops up is 时事报道. It wouldn't be a huge stretch to see someone think of 道 as the simplification of 導 by mistake.

Interesting...In the beginning, when she says: 各位听众朋友好，欢迎收听《时事报道》节目，我是莫小宁 it does seem like she says 报导。。。but in this sentence at the end 请听我的同事项韬为您带来相关的报道 it sounds like 报道 (to me at least:mrgreen:)
