Where to study Chinese in china?

Also thinking about Wuhan and Guilin but can't find reviews from students who studied there before.

Whatever you do, DO NOT come to Wuhan - lived here for over an year now and it has got to be the worst city I've seen in China, and I've traveled around. The local dialect (this is purely subjective, though) is horrible, the people aren't all that nice, compared to, let's say, Kunming, there's almost nothing to do and see, the weather's not nice and even if you do end up in a 'normal' university (pedagogical would be a better translation), that doesn't guarantee you'll end up in a perfect putonghua environment. Many of our teachers have heavy accents zh-z, ch-c, sh-s, r-l/y, -ng/n, l/n and there are even some, although in other departments, who can't even speak putonghua.

The good thing about Wuhan is that everything is dirt cheap.

Thank you for posting.

After reading your opinions, I know I few places to don't go and study!

Xiamen is on the top but I'm a little bit afraid that the city is very similar to Hangzhou.

A friend whose classmate recently opened a hotpot restaurant told me it's common practice to reuse any leftover 'soup' for the next customers.

2 gogetter4ever: Could you please give any info about that school in Sanya (Hainan) where a guy you know studied?

I suspect that poster was actually hoping to attract people to his own school - if you're still reading you're welcome to post, but do declare your interest :)

大家好!

In April 2009, myself and several other international educators and China veterans founded the Chinese Language Institute in Guilin, China. Our institute focuses on fluency through immersion and one-on-one intensive Chinese training. We provide immersion-based housing arrangements (including a shared 3-bedroom with two Chinese grad students option), up to 22 weekly hours of one-on-one lessons per week, full enrollment at our affiliate, Guangxi Normal University, monthly travel excursion, weekly activities and 24-hour emergency assistance.

I encourage everyone to explore our Web site (www.StudyCLI.org). Best of luck to everyone looking for a fitting location for Chinese study!

祝你一切顺利,

Robert

I am sorry I can help with very detailed information, but I was on a buz trip to Shijiazhuang (capital of Hebei, 2h by train from Beijing) a few months ago and if you really want to imerse yourself into Chinese life, in a place that is not expensive and where people speak good Chinese, it seemed the perfect city to me. Not sure what schools are on offer there, but I am sure there are Chinese classes.
