My Chinese Tattoo . . . what the heck does it mean?

Could someone please translate my tattoo, i got it over 18 years ago and I loved how you could express a word with lovely lines. However it wasn't as popular back then as it is now and I'm not sure if what we thought was courage and truth is actually what is tattooed on me. I am under the impression that two characters together could turn into a different meaning altogether? Hope someone can help. Sorry if not clear but being an old tattoo, it's starting to blur.

PS - I looked at the shape and it was 勇氣, but I looked at it again and was not sure if the tattoo artist had gotten all the details right. But as it has started to blur, who cares.

Well it's actually 勇気, the Japanese simplified version, which explains why it seems to be lacking details.
