skylee Posted September 15, 2009 at 03:59 PM Report Share Posted September 15, 2009 at 03:59 PM (edited) 碰壁 = hitting the wall = making mistakes / not getting what one wants (imagine telling a brick wall what you want) "all around is dark/pitch black" implies that the society / bureaucracy was dark (not transparent) and corrupt, and one couldn't see which way to go, therefore making mistakes, and getting hurt (the nose flattened by the wall analogy).
