trien27 Posted September 20, 2009 at 01:52 AM Report Posted September 20, 2009 at 01:52 AM (edited) When I look up "canoe" I get 独木舟, however when I google that term what comes up seems to be about what I would call Kayaking. Is there a different word for a canoe? 独木舟 = a wood boat used by one person. A canoe is a small narrow boat, typically human-powered, though it may also be powered by sails or small electric or gas motors. Canoes usually are pointed at both bow and stern and are normally open on top, but can be decked over (i.e. covered, similar to a kayak). Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canoe A kayak is a small human-powered boat. It typically has a covered deck, and a cockpit covered by a spraydeck also known as a skirt. The kayak was used by the native Ainu, Aleut and Eskimo hunters in sub-Arctic regions of northeastern Asia, North America and Greenland. It historically was, and often still is, propelled by a double-bladed paddle in the hands of a sitting paddler. Modern kayaks come in a wide variety of designs and materials for specialized purposes. Kayaks are in some parts of the world (ie United Kingdom) referred to as canoes and vice versa.
