zchenyu Posted September 20, 2009 at 01:24 AM Report Posted September 20, 2009 at 01:24 AM "你有沒有獻出你的愛心啊?" I know what each of the individual words mean, but could someone provide a better translation? Quote
James Johnston Posted September 21, 2009 at 06:39 PM Report Posted September 21, 2009 at 06:39 PM Without any context, it's not easy to give anything more than a straight forward translation. You haven't mentioned what you think the sentence means, but if you understand the words you should get something like "Have you offered/given your love/affection?" Here's an example sentence from nciku to compare: 人人献出一片爱心。 Everybody offered his or her loving care. There may be less clumsy ways of saying this in English, but it's pointless to guess without know the context. Quote
zchenyu Posted September 21, 2009 at 07:59 PM Author Report Posted September 21, 2009 at 07:59 PM Ok, that's what I thought but wanted to make sure it wasn't a phrase with a different connotative meaning. I asked a friend and she said it meant "Have you given your compassion?" Thanks Quote
HashiriKata Posted September 22, 2009 at 06:45 AM Report Posted September 22, 2009 at 06:45 AM I think it may be something like: "Have you shown (them) any compassion?!" I agree with James Johnston above that it'd help a great deal in understanding the sentence if you'd offer the context where the sentence is used. Quote
leeyah Posted September 22, 2009 at 01:45 PM Report Posted September 22, 2009 at 01:45 PM Yes. 爱心 can be interpreted as 真正的爱在心中. It implies unselfish love and care for others >> 献出爱心>> 献出关怀>> 关怀他人. So, we have loving and caring parents >> 有爱心的父母, and Care Bears became 爱心熊 in Mandarin. However, since it is often seen in the names of charity organizations, compassion seems like the most appropriate English word for it. Anyway, here's a 六年级 school kid's definition of how to >>做一个有爱心的人 Quote
