leeyah Posted September 24, 2009 at 10:56 AM Report Posted September 24, 2009 at 10:56 AM I've been looking for (any kind of) mustard 'cause I love it especially as a spice with fish/土豆, but I haven't been able to find any. In the supermarkets there's mayonnaise, some salad dressings, and ketchup, so I thought I'd find mustard as well, or perhaps I didn't look in the right places. Mustard is a herb, right? Does anyone know if it's grown in China at all or is there a local substitute for it perhaps? I just don't feel like asking people pls send me a tube of Thomy Scharfer Senf for my birthday... Any information on where/how I can buy this priceless condiment in China will be greatly appreciated. Quote
gerri Posted September 24, 2009 at 01:29 PM Report Posted September 24, 2009 at 01:29 PM Depends on where you are... in Shanghai, City Shop might even have Thomy Scharfer Senf, I seem to remember the Carrefour carrying (French) mustard. Other places, I'd definitely try Carrefour or Metro. Otherwise, no, China is not big on mustard. Mustard greens, sometimes, maybe, but not mustard. "You want hot, get chile peppers." ;-) Quote
leeyah Posted September 24, 2009 at 02:03 PM Author Report Posted September 24, 2009 at 02:03 PM Well, compared to Shanghai, Guangzhou is a small town... Haven't checked out Carrefour yet, I was certain ParkNShop or Jusco would have it. And with all the construction in expectation of 亚运 next fall, getting to the nearest Carrefour from school can be a bit of a mess right now. It's definitely not the Guangzhou I used to know... but thanks for reminding me of places to look for it & also for the info on Chinese preferences: "You want hot, get chile peppers." ;-) Right, I see tons of those small jars with dark-red jam-like thing in it. Tried it once or twice, just to make sure - NEVER again ... Quote
akdn Posted September 25, 2009 at 02:00 AM Report Posted September 25, 2009 at 02:00 AM How about wasabi, as a substitute? Also, you can get mustard oil (芥末油?) quite easily, amongst all the other oils (chilli, sesame, etc) in the supermarkets. Quote
leeyah Posted September 25, 2009 at 06:55 AM Author Report Posted September 25, 2009 at 06:55 AM Wasabi?! God, NO! Didn't know about 芥末油, will look for it this afternoon, should be ideal as salad-dressing, plus perhaps I can save a few kuai on 橄榄油, if it tastes anything like mustard (芥末?). Thanks! Quote
gougou Posted September 25, 2009 at 06:59 AM Report Posted September 25, 2009 at 06:59 AM Don't you have any expat shops in Guangzhou (like Jenny Lou's in Beijing)? They definitely have mustard here (even the a l'ancienne grainy one - love it). Quote
imron Posted September 25, 2009 at 07:00 AM Report Posted September 25, 2009 at 07:00 AM The definitely have mustard in China. It usually goes by the name 芥末酱. If you can't find it in supermarkets, you could try visiting Subway. You might be able to convince them to sell you some separately. Quote
akdn Posted September 25, 2009 at 07:25 AM Report Posted September 25, 2009 at 07:25 AM should be ideal as salad-dressing Yeah, some 凉菜 use it. Careful, though... potent stuff. Quote
leeyah Posted September 25, 2009 at 07:59 AM Author Report Posted September 25, 2009 at 07:59 AM Great tips, guys! Thank you ALL for taking the time to reply to my (somewhat banal) inquiry. Quote
BrandeX Posted October 2, 2009 at 11:36 AM Report Posted October 2, 2009 at 11:36 AM I'd take a closer look at Jusco or Park N Shop. I use French's in a squeeze bottle, same as in the USA, and I don't shop at many places or very often, but it's gotten into my fridge at some point during the last year. Quote
liuzhou Posted October 2, 2009 at 12:24 PM Report Posted October 2, 2009 at 12:24 PM I've never had any problems finding mustard. I have both Dijon and a whole grain in the fridge. And Iive in the sticks. Quote

Alex_Hart Posted May 9, 2017 at 12:17 PM Report Posted May 9, 2017 at 12:17 PM Walmart has French's here - I've seen a Walmart in most cities in China (sadly!) so might want to check there. Otherwise... Taobao? Quote
