Thanks Kennny for your help. I guess I should have pointed out I was looking for colloquial expression rather than formal ones. They are a bit harder to find in the dictionary.

It can be added that if someone rises above insults，in particular instances, a Chinese may remark: 他懒得去理这些insults. Or 他对这些insults不屑。Or 尽管受到insults，他还是镇定自若。

The gist would be to not engage in the same ill-mannered activities as others.

别跟。。。鬼混（在一起）more colloquial

别跟。。。同流合污 some formal

别跟。。。沆瀣一气 or 狼狈为奸 more written

Also can someone let me know what the phrase would be for “rise above something”, ie not let oneself get affected by other people’s intrigues/trivial things for example.

I don't understand very clearly what you want. I will try giving some phrases.

你得有点儿肚量，别为这事发急。

你得有点儿自己的主见，别受人骗。

你还是聪明点，别上了他人的当。

你还是放宽点儿心，这事儿没啥大不了的。

就这点儿破事儿，你。。。。（similar as 为了鸡毛蒜皮的小事。。。不值得）

Would it do to use the phrase 为了鸡毛蒜皮的小事。。。不值得?

raise oneself above (triviality/intrigue) = 对。。。采取超然态度 / 心态 >> in a more colloquial context as 保持（一份 / 一点) 超然 ：
