I think I know where the confusion was- sorry about my comment about assumptions. You're right that language is about preconceived notions, also called connotation, also called assumptions.

My assumption comment was meant to be just a reference to not assume about people's personal preference when it comes to playing sports not necessarily about the connotation of 打球 in daily use. Sorry about that!
