如此 is the literary form of 这样>> 原来如此 = 原来(是)这样。

I'd translate it as "Oh! I seeeee......"

I agree with renzhe here. You could say something like "So, that's how it is!" or "Oh, it's like that, is it?", which are both fine, but I think in most situations, an "Oh, I see" (with stress on and lengthening of the "see") would be the most common way of expressing the feeling.

I gotta agree- I think my English response tends to be "oh!". The i see is a bit more clear if it is written but in spoken not always there. "I get it" or "that makes sense" all are kind of the same type of filler, even though they are not direct translations.
