mxian Posted October 11, 2009 at 04:43 PM Report Share Posted October 11, 2009 at 04:43 PM This looks like a ci poem of the poet 納蘭性德: 春云吹散湘帘雨. 絮黏蝴蝶飞还住. 人在玉楼中. 楼高四面风. 柳烟丝一把. 暝色笼鸳瓦. 休近小阑干. 夕阳无限山. Would you help translate it for me please. Thank you very much.
leeyah Posted October 12, 2009 at 03:24 PM Report Share Posted October 12, 2009 at 03:24 PM An old poem, how nice! (And how difficult!) Well, poetry is hard to understand, let alone translate with precision, but I really like it , so here's my version of 春云吹散湘帘雨,絮黏蝴蝶飞还住。人在玉楼中,楼高四面风。 柳烟丝一把,暝色笼鸳瓦。休近小阑干,夕阳无限山 "clouds of spring shower rainy curtains over the river xiang like a fluttering butterfly flying with heavy wings to and fro in the lofty jade palace, surrounded by strong winds, pipe in hand like a love bird caged in darkness I am pacing across the balustrade, in the endless, towering evening glow" i.e.>> explanation in Chinese says he (the author) is spellbound, restless, he feels there's nothing to hold on to, no place he can go to, to put away this feeling of love which he finds so hard to resist. Hofmann Posted October 13, 2009 at 02:57 AM Report Share Posted October 13, 2009 at 02:57 AM That should be 闌桿. 闌干 is weird.
mxian Posted October 13, 2009 at 04:46 PM Author Report Share Posted October 13, 2009 at 04:46 PM Thanks, Hofmann. Here's a question about the meaning of 柳烟丝: I think 烟丝 = minced tobacco. But 柳 = willow. Does that mean this kind of tobacco made of minced willow branch? If so, that's weird! Does 柳烟丝 has another meaning? Or, could it be that 柳烟丝一把 = A smoking pipe made of willow wood? I'd appreciate a lot if someone can help clarify this.
leeyah Posted October 13, 2009 at 07:42 PM Report Share Posted October 13, 2009 at 07:42 PM 阑干 (闌干) is the old (书面语) variant of 栏杆 (欄桿) , so they are synonyms. As for 柳烟丝一把, I think it refers to the stuff, i.e. material the pipe is made of >> 海柳烟斗鉴赏—男士的掌上精品, obviously an expensive item indicating a man of rank, a gentleman.
