linsook Posted October 13, 2009 at 06:39 PM Report Posted October 13, 2009 at 06:39 PM Hey, I plan to live in Beijing for maybe a year. With regards to renting an apartment all I need to do is find a place, sign up a contract and goto a local police station with landlord and contract in hand and that sums up my registration correct? Are there any other legal matters I must take care of as a foreigner?? Quote
abcdefg Posted October 13, 2009 at 07:04 PM Report Posted October 13, 2009 at 07:04 PM Take along some photos of yourself, take your passport and some xerox copies of its relevant pages and search the forum (many posts) for more. Quote
XiaoBin Posted October 14, 2009 at 10:32 AM Report Posted October 14, 2009 at 10:32 AM Apt wise that's basically it. Note that sometimes your temp resident will only be valid for the time you paid your rent for. So if you pay the landlord 5 months in a 1yr contract, the temp resident will be for 5 months. After you pay the rest you have to go back with your landlord to extend your temp resident. Oh and you have to go to your local police station first to get a paper. In every Jiayuan there is usually a local police station. They will give you a paper. Take that with you to the "bigger" police station to get your temp resident. 1 Quote

Sorry, but I don't recognize any of this. What 'paper', and what's a Jiayuan? What you need to take to the police station varies over time and location. I've been fine with passport, rental contract, and a copy of the landlord's ID (not sure if they looked at that or not). Some people have reported needing the landlord to be there in person. I never needed to take photos, they just scanned it off the passport. The best advice is just to take everything you've got and let them figure it out. They'll let you know if you've missed anything. XiaoBin Posted October 20, 2009 at 02:29 PM Report Posted October 20, 2009 at 02:29 PM I did this twice, but it's in Wudaokou area tho. Not sure if it works otherwise somewhere else. Every Jiayuan (apartment community) has their own little security agency. They will provide a paper that you're living in that community. They will check the contract and other stuff. Take this paper to the actual police station, and they will give you a temp resident. I also heard that you have to take your landlord with you. Not sure if you can do it otherwise. In my case my landlord was always with me. Quote
gougou Posted October 21, 2009 at 03:50 AM Report Posted October 21, 2009 at 03:50 AM Oh and you have to go to your local police station first to get a paper. In every Jiayuan there is usually a local police station. In organized compounds, you do sometimes have to get a proof that you're living there, but mostly the property management will give that to you, not a local police station.Whether or not you need to take the landlord depends on the specific PSB bureau you're going to; some will insist on it, some won't (I just registered a new flat at Beixinqiao and only had to show the contract). Also never needed any pictures of myself in the process (not counting the one that the real estate agent's assistant wanted to take with me...). Quote
