juncheng language school

Has anybody studied at http://www.junchengedu.com/eng.htm language school? It is mentioned in the sticky. It seems incredibly cheap but there isn't a lot of information and no mention of the cost of accommodation. Can anybody recommend any other private schools in Beijing. I am thinking of going there next Summer but can only spare 2-3 weeks.

Not since 2004, it seems

The on-line brochure may also be quoting 2004 prices. Sixty hours of teaching costs 1,200 RMB. If I did the math right, that works out to 20 RMB an hour.

No, I emailed them and those are the current prices. It seems too cheap to be true, which is why I'm trying to find out more about the school.

Do you think a good teacher would be prepared to teach for that amount of money?

You've jumped to the conclusion that he'd be the only student in the class. I was under the impression Juncheng did fairly large classes, which makes a cheaper per hour charge more feasible. Even 12 students - not large in comparison with Chinese university courses - at 20Y an hour each gives you 240 per hour, more than enough to pay a decent wage, cover costs, and leave a profit for the capitalists.

I just looked again.. More information on this page: http://www.junchengedu.com/kcsz.htm

Looks like four people in a class for 20 RMB each per hour. 一对一indeed costs more.

But since the Original Poster only wanted to take 2 or 3 weeks of study, I'm not sure if he would get the monthly rate.

Unfortunately I can't read the Chinese but the prices on the Chinese page don't seem to match those on the English. In the email I received I was told 1200RMB per month for group lessons and 80RMB for individual lessons. Can someone tell me what it says on the Chinese page please?

The Chinese language webpage at http://www.junchengedu.com/kcsz.htm says that long-term classes (presumably a month or more) cost 1500 RMB per month if there are 4 people in a class taking it together, 3 hours a day, 5 days a week.. Same thing costs 1800 RMB per month if there are 3 people per class. That’s for “ordinary” and advanced classes, not special-purpose classes such as HSK prep. "Ordinary" isn't defined, but probably means beginner and intermediate.

It says one to one teaching costs 100 RMB per hour for intermediate level and 120 per hour for advanced. No listing for beginning level.

havent been there and honestly dont konw anyone who has. However class prices are mainly influenced by

1) how many students there are in class

2) how much they pay their teachers

3) how much time and money they spend on training their teachers

4) if they use full time or part time teachers

Depends how much you want to progress in 2-3 weeks and where you stand in the price/result continuum (did I spell that correctly?)
