Quest Posted August 8, 2004 at 11:56 AM Report Posted August 8, 2004 at 11:56 AM I was exploring different local radio stations in Guangdong, and was trying to see how each sub 粤 dialect sounds(e.g. 开平,新会,东莞,顺德,汕头,台山等等). To my surprise, all stations used perfect 广州话。 Do you think all this media exposure to 广州话 would help converge different Cantonese dialects? or in other words, kill the other sub dialects? references: 东莞:(the dj speaks perfect 广州话) mms://211.148.151.133/radiodg/audio/xtxwxxn/m02332-1.wma (recorded) 顺德:(sometimes in mandarin) http://www.fm901.com.cn/onair/ (live) 台山:(sometimes in mandarin) http://www.taishan.gd.cn/radio/radio.htm (live) etc... berylchan Posted August 9, 2004 at 07:23 AM Report Posted August 9, 2004 at 07:23 AM 开平、新会、东莞、顺德、台山 use both cantonese and local dialect in daily, cantonese is some kind of official language in these cities, even in 茂名、佛山、从化... That's why you found those radio stations used 广州话. Almost everybody understands cantonese in these cities. But, it's not that common in 汕头. We speak 潮州话 in 汕头. I am sure you can find radio station of Shantou in it's dialect. Cantonese just become popular in Shantou these two years, but we mainly use 潮州话 all around. Quote
