Riverside Scene at Qing Ming Festival

Check out this awesome scroll. Most of us have probably seen this scroll by Zhang Zeduan depicting city life in the Song dynasty. The scroll was discovered in good shape despite being more than 800 years old.

I brought a full reproduction of this in Liulichang, Beijing years ago, I was told the guy made 5 of these and no more.

I bought a copy of 清明上河圖 from some jackass in Nanjing's 鼓樓 who told me about how he'd labriously painted it, taking him a total of over two months. It was obviously printed, so I bargained hard, and felt quite accomplished, until I went to the local crap market and saw multiple units on sale for a fraction of what I've bargained it down for. I later saw it repeadtedly in tourist markets throughout the mainland, so in the end I gave it to a friend, telling him about how some local artist stated that he'd this was his 傑作, his masterpiece, the culmination of decades of dilligent study and refined technique.

Regardless, it is a fascinating portrait of a moment in history, and beautiful to admire, irrespective of how many copies might be circulating about.
