a_foxie_smile Posted October 22, 2009 at 08:49 AM Report Posted October 22, 2009 at 08:49 AM Hello, I hope that someone has some ideas for me. I was stupid and bought some durian wafers that I left in the car overnight. Now all the car smells of tha wafers. It is really bad, more like a harsh chemical than fresh durian smell. Has anyone any idea of how I can get rid of the smell? Thanks! Quote
Scoobyqueen Posted October 22, 2009 at 09:02 AM Report Posted October 22, 2009 at 09:02 AM What about using a strong disinfectant like维鲁士 also known as chlorophenyl, it kills smells as well as germs. I personally really like the smell. It is also known as Dettol as a tradename. Quote
Daan Posted October 22, 2009 at 09:47 AM Report Posted October 22, 2009 at 09:47 AM Yeah, use some disinfectant and scrub the place where you left those wafers thoroughly, then leave the doors (or windows) open for a while, and then never buy those durian wafers again - if they smell like a harsh chemical after leaving them in your car for just one night, I wouldn't want to eat them ;) Quote
Mouseneb Posted October 22, 2009 at 09:56 AM Report Posted October 22, 2009 at 09:56 AM So, Scoobyqueen, I'm kind of curious - do you like the smell of Dettol or Durian? Quote
a_foxie_smile Posted October 22, 2009 at 10:08 AM Author Report Posted October 22, 2009 at 10:08 AM Thanks guys, There is no residue from the wafers so I have nothing to clean, they stayed in a sealed packet. I guess I best leave the windows open wide..but I will have to watch no one steals the car I didn't eat the wafers. They smelled so bad like chemicals that I thought I might get ill. They are now safely in the garbage truck. Quote
Scoobyqueen Posted October 22, 2009 at 10:54 AM Report Posted October 22, 2009 at 10:54 AM So, Scoobyqueen, I'm kind of curious - do you like the smell of Dettol or Durian? I do like the smell of Durian as well. I also like the smell of ammoniac, terpentine, 风油精, nail varnish and in China they use really poisonous smelling paint... Something to do with my nose not being straight (inside) I was once told. Quote
adrianlondon Posted October 22, 2009 at 10:56 AM Report Posted October 22, 2009 at 10:56 AM I once had a very bad smell in my car (we're going back a few years, it was a Fiat 127). It got worse and worse, and I had to drive with the windows open. Eventually (hey, I was a student) I stopped being lazy and checked around the car. Turned out that two weeks previously a pint of milk had fallen out of a carrierbag and lodged under my seat. Quote
calibre2001 Posted October 22, 2009 at 11:43 AM Report Posted October 22, 2009 at 11:43 AM Put some charcoal in the car and leave it there for a few days. The carbon should absorb the smell. Quote
liuzhou Posted October 22, 2009 at 12:03 PM Report Posted October 22, 2009 at 12:03 PM .but I will have to watch no one steals the car If it smells so b ad, that is unlikely. On the other hand, it may solve your problem. Is it insured? Quote
Daan Posted October 22, 2009 at 12:17 PM Report Posted October 22, 2009 at 12:17 PM The carbon should absorb the smell. I don't think these forums will ever cease to amaze me. That's a great idea! Quote
Hofmann Posted October 23, 2009 at 05:34 AM Report Posted October 23, 2009 at 05:34 AM There's obviously something stuck on the surfaces, else air circulation would clear it away. Got a steamer? Quote
flywhc Posted October 23, 2009 at 06:05 PM Report Posted October 23, 2009 at 06:05 PM Try Bamboo charcoal 竹炭 Quote
xianhua Posted October 23, 2009 at 07:11 PM Report Posted October 23, 2009 at 07:11 PM (edited) You'll need one of these beauties You turn the air con to recirculate, let the canister off and then leave it for 10 mins until it's empty. They are designed for cleaning the air con system, but will freshen up the whole vehicle. Failing that idea, a lemon cut in half would help. Edited October 23, 2009 at 08:08 PM by xianhua Quote
a_foxie_smile Posted October 24, 2009 at 05:07 PM Author Report Posted October 24, 2009 at 05:07 PM Thanks for all the suggestions everyone Leaving all the windows open while I drove for a few miles really helped and the smell has pretty much gone now. *phew* Those wafers are dangerous! I swear even real durian fruit doesn;t smell like that! I thought I'd bust something in the car at first. No more wafers! Quote
Daan Posted October 26, 2009 at 03:40 AM Report Posted October 26, 2009 at 03:40 AM That's good to hear! Post some pics of the offenders so we'll know which ones to avoid ;) Quote
a_foxie_smile Posted October 26, 2009 at 05:46 PM Author Report Posted October 26, 2009 at 05:46 PM haha well it was the ones like those listed here: http://shop.waiyeehong.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=3869 (not from this shop though). I guess maybe it was a bad batch? I can't believe they would sell if they all smelled like that ;) Quote
Daan Posted October 27, 2009 at 06:20 AM Report Posted October 27, 2009 at 06:20 AM Haha, well, you never know...real durians smell so bad it's illegal to take them on the MRT in Singapore, let alone durian wafers that contain "artificial durians" according to that website... ;) But yeah, it was probably a bad batch - I hope so at least! a_foxie_smile Posted October 31, 2009 at 12:39 PM Author Report Posted October 31, 2009 at 12:39 PM I went back to the store today and the whole shelf of the Durian wafers had been cleared. I guess maybe someone had the same experience as I did and reported it. Quote
mcgau Posted December 20, 2009 at 03:30 PM Report Posted December 20, 2009 at 03:30 PM I don't know, but i know smoking doesn't help. I worked in a disaster several times and in the worst one, more than 1000 corpse were laid on the floor and all my hair and clothing stink. I smoked and thought that it was really a genius to fumigate my cloth in that way. In turn, my clothing was full of a mixed odor of corpse and tobacco as if I kissed a heavy chain smoking corpse. abcdefg Posted December 20, 2009 at 10:17 PM Report Posted December 20, 2009 at 10:17 PM What an experience, @mcgau. I would love to hear more. I lke eating fresh durian when they are in season, but have a hard time with the smell. Quote
