HashiriKata Posted November 2, 2009 at 07:40 AM Report Share Posted November 2, 2009 at 07:40 AM Guoke, are you sure it is 做人? Well, if we can say 做饭, I can't see why not 做人

isela Posted November 2, 2009 at 08:01 AM Report Share Posted November 2, 2009 at 08:01 AM hohoho~ Was expecting a discussion on the meaning of life... But anyway, it's good that we get this sentence clear now.
HashiriKata Posted November 2, 2009 at 08:09 AM Report Share Posted November 2, 2009 at 08:09 AM Ok, this is a serious question: I know a recently married couple who are in their 40's. They are said to be trying for a baby. I wonder how this "trying for a baby" would be properly & neatly expressed in Chinese. Anyone? Kenny同志 Posted November 2, 2009 at 08:17 AM Report Share Posted November 2, 2009 at 08:17 AM (edited) 想(尽if they try hard to do so)法儿生个孩子。 better translation expected! PS: Are you implying that the couple have trouble having a baby? If so, I think the above translation suffices. PS: In a particular context, we can say: 那两口子为了要(生)个孩子,办法都想尽了。 Edited November 2, 2009 at 09:15 AM by kenny2006woo
HashiriKata Posted November 2, 2009 at 08:41 AM Report Share Posted November 2, 2009 at 08:41 AM Thanks kenny! PS: Are you implying that the couple have trouble having a baby? From the English, it sounds like "babies don't come easy" to me
Kenny同志 Posted November 2, 2009 at 08:50 AM Report Share Posted November 2, 2009 at 08:50 AM Well, I thought that the couple had trouble having a baby because they were in their 40's. If it means "babies do not come easy" then I cannot come up with a piece of neat Chinese. 我们说:养孩子不容易。 但我很少听到有人说:生孩子不容易的。也许有人会打趣地这样说,因为生孩子的妇女要经过十月怀胎,临产和分娩时候还会很痛。 PS: 不过也可以这样说,“年纪大了,要个孩子(生个孩子)就不容易了”
HashiriKata Posted November 2, 2009 at 08:59 AM Report Share Posted November 2, 2009 at 08:59 AM Thanks again, kenny! From the English, it sounds like "babies don't come easy" to me "babies don't come easy" here is a euphemism

Kenny同志 Posted November 2, 2009 at 09:49 AM Report Share Posted November 2, 2009 at 09:49 AM Hehe, well, that explains it. All the sources are from entertainment journalists (娱记). I am afraid “做人” which means giving birth to a baby, is absent in serious writings. And in my opinion it carries a strong sense of 暧昧. It can be perceived as a slang. When you say 做人(生孩子), I am not sure the listener can get the intended thing. Some may know its meaning but not everybody.
xiaocai Posted November 2, 2009 at 09:56 AM Report Share Posted November 2, 2009 at 09:56 AM Well personally I don't think it is a good way to use 做人 in this particular sense just because it comes up with some returns in google. You can try to google 绿茵如毯 and you might be surprised with the number of results you will get.
Guoke Posted November 2, 2009 at 10:15 AM Report Share Posted November 2, 2009 at 10:15 AM 做人 doesn't mean 生孩子, it means 做爱. With the help of the context, I guess it's not difficult to tell if the speaker means 做爱 when he/she says 做人. I didn't invent this term. I just hear it from time to time on Taiwanese , Hong Kong and Singapore TV programmes and I have no intention of turning this into a meaningless argument of who is right and who is wrong.
