vajsha Posted November 8, 2009 at 02:48 AM Report Posted November 8, 2009 at 02:48 AM I was wondering if anyone had experience shipping textbooks (or other large, heavy boxes) from the US to China? Several threads have suggested that re-evaluating what I need is better than shipping, but I cannot teach in my field without my texts and that means getting them to Chongqing! Is there a shipping company that you all trust? Thanks Quote
Daan Posted November 8, 2009 at 03:51 AM Report Posted November 8, 2009 at 03:51 AM Depends on your budget. DHL, UPS, TNT and FedEx could probably all take care of shipments from the US to Chongqing, but that would be quite expensive. The USPS would be another option if you're in no hurry. I wonder, though: does the school where you will be teaching not mandate certain textbooks? Or are you planning to bring those textbooks for your own reference? Quote
vajsha Posted November 8, 2009 at 05:33 PM Author Report Posted November 8, 2009 at 05:33 PM The problem is that there is no one textbook for Insect Chemical Ecology - (in fact, I will be proposing the text to a publisher this December). Thus, I need about 2 boxes worth of books to be shipped. Quote
roddy Posted November 8, 2009 at 06:34 PM Report Posted November 8, 2009 at 06:34 PM That sounds like the kind of thing your employer should be paying for - if they haven't already said they will, ask, and then maybe you can stop worrying about cost. No actual ideas on how to ship them. From the UK I'd just say send them well in advance surface mail. Given that you do need them for work and presumably this is a reasonably long-term stay, it may be worth asking the airline if you can have some extra luggage allowance. I've seen that work, although admittedly not for some time . . . Quote
