tooironic Posted November 10, 2009 at 03:00 AM Report Posted November 10, 2009 at 03:00 AM I was editing the wiktionary entry for prostitute today and have been trying to distinguish between the different words for it in Chinese. This is what I've come up with: 妓女 (jìnǚ) (female; formal) 妓男 (jìnán) (male; formal) 雞, 鸡 (jī) (female; slang) 鴨, 鸭 (yā) (male; slang) 雞婆, 鸡婆 (jīpó) (vulgar) 娼妓 (chāngjì) (archaic) 風塵女, 风尘女 (fēngchénnǚ) (archaic) Are there any more terms? renzhe Posted November 10, 2009 at 01:08 PM Report Posted November 10, 2009 at 01:08 PM Great list. Be careful, though, many of those can only mean prostitute in very rare and specific contexts. Things like 先生, 姑娘, 花旦 and 姊妹 don't usually mean "prostitute". In fact, they are all rather neutral, except 花旦, which doesn't mean prostitute either, but the women playing these roles were often accused of being such in the olden days. Even 小姐 doesn't mean prostitute if the context is missing (expensive night club or brothel, for example). Quote

Erbse Posted November 10, 2009 at 01:37 PM Report Posted November 10, 2009 at 01:37 PM Pipas, you must be a professional! The correct English word for that is "pimp" ;) It is "pimp" if he works in the position of the manager. If he just works there to entertain the guests, he is indeed a "professional". Quote
heifeng Posted November 10, 2009 at 01:45 PM Report Posted November 10, 2009 at 01:45 PM (edited) hmm this list is interesting, but the context is really very important. Take 内人 for example, this can be used to refer to one's wife, as in 内人可以指: 对别人称自己的妻子,同内子 内人 (唐朝),唐朝选入宫中宜春院的歌舞妓 内人 (朝鲜王朝),朝鲜王朝宫廷中级别最低的女官,为从九品 [/b] This makes me curious about the word pimp then. Are there that many words to explain this too? I've heard of 拉皮条/'皮条客/皮条before, but are there other commonly used words? Feel free to keep up the prostitute theme, but we might as well throw in other associated words since we are going down that path on this thread for the prostitute list, if you are going to reference KTV type things, then there is 坐台小姐/女 but i think the actual prostituting seems to occur after they ‘出台’ also, there is 三陪(小姐) Edited November 10, 2009 at 02:01 PM by heifeng Quote

jobin Posted November 10, 2009 at 02:26 PM Report Posted November 10, 2009 at 02:26 PM i heard from a local that 姑娘, gu niang, was a term used by the japanese invaders in north china for the chinese girls they desired and abused and thus this word took on a negative connotation. he, my friend, told me to avoid using this word for young girls as it only reminds the folks of the recent and horrid past and casts girls as merely sex objects. skylee Posted November 10, 2009 at 02:48 PM Report Posted November 10, 2009 at 02:48 PM A few years ago while I was in Beijing a tricycle driver called me 姑娘 (really startled me) ...... In Hong Kong, 姑娘 is still commonly used to mean nurses, and less commonly to mean female social workers. Quote
anonymoose Posted November 10, 2009 at 02:56 PM Report Posted November 10, 2009 at 02:56 PM In Shanghai 姑娘 is used very commonly to refer to any young girl. In a restaurant, one often calls 小姑娘 to call the waitress over. Quote
