xiaozhu Posted August 17, 2004 at 12:33 AM Report Posted August 17, 2004 at 12:33 AM Chinese weightlifters are amazing, I wish I knew how they trained, I also wish there was more that 5 minutes a day coverage of the weightlifting in the UK Quote
Alhazred Posted August 17, 2004 at 02:21 PM Report Posted August 17, 2004 at 02:21 PM Training for weightlifting indeed made major progress, weightlifters lifted 111.5 kg in the 1896 olympics and 472.5 kg in 2000 in Sydney, or maybe it is something else... Quote
Quest Posted August 17, 2004 at 02:24 PM Author Report Posted August 17, 2004 at 02:24 PM new lifting techniques and scientific body building? Quote
Alhazred Posted August 17, 2004 at 02:28 PM Report Posted August 17, 2004 at 02:28 PM It surely is a combination of the two, but such a leap points to some scientific products being used... Quote
bhchao Posted August 18, 2004 at 05:34 AM Report Posted August 18, 2004 at 05:34 AM Anyone planning to be in Beijing for the 2008 Summer Olympics? It is good to see China already making preparations on venues more than 3 years in advance. Hopefully there won't be any empty seats like what is happening now in Athens. Quote
TSkillet Posted August 18, 2004 at 03:27 PM Report Posted August 18, 2004 at 03:27 PM I guarentee that there will be no empty seats. All those tickets - if they're not sold - and probably even before they go on sale - will end up in the hands of people with guanxi and they will be filled. You might say, well - it's different, it's an international sporting event. I'll just point to the ticket "sales" of the NBA China Games upcoming event in Beijing where 10,000 tickets were supposed to go on sale and only 1,000 ended up being "paid" tickets - and 9,000 ended up being comp'd. wushijiao Posted August 19, 2004 at 03:46 AM Report Posted August 19, 2004 at 03:46 AM Sure, China is the number one gold medal country so far. But, 我国 (USA! USA!) is kicking the crap out of other countries in bronzes, 9-6 (Russia and Australia). On a serious note, why is it that the American press always uses the total medal count to show who is ahead, while China uses the gold? Odd. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5592314/ http://2004.sina.com.cn/ Quote
Quest Posted August 19, 2004 at 04:55 AM Author Report Posted August 19, 2004 at 04:55 AM well, because America has like a zillion atheletes competiting they would always get the most medals. Look at the official medals table at: http://www.olympics.com and BBC's table at: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/olympics_2004/default.stm The US's ranking system is the odd one and for a reason Quote
Adam Posted August 19, 2004 at 06:59 AM Report Posted August 19, 2004 at 06:59 AM haha, maybe its only america using the total medal count to show who's ahead. Here it shows the table according to golds, so china is at the top. Quote

bhchao Posted August 19, 2004 at 11:43 PM Report Posted August 19, 2004 at 11:43 PM China and USA tied with 14 gold medals each. This is going to be a thrill ride. Quote
chengdude Posted August 20, 2004 at 12:50 AM Report Posted August 20, 2004 at 12:50 AM It's interesting that almost 50% of China's medals (14 out of 29) at these Olympics have come from two disciplines: weightlifting and shooting. Quote
Quest Posted August 20, 2004 at 01:20 AM Author Report Posted August 20, 2004 at 01:20 AM It's interesting that almost 50% of China's medals (14 out of 29) at these Olympics have come from two disciplines: weightlifting and shooting they won 3 in diving so far (and 'gave' one to Greece). usually they would get some golds from gymnastics, but they keep falling off the bars this year.......... also pingpong golds in the coming. Japan won 5 from Judo, the rest from swimming. Australia: swimming. US: swimming (will be track and fields later) I would say the golds for China are far more evenly distributed than some other countries. Quote
bhchao Posted August 20, 2004 at 02:42 AM Report Posted August 20, 2004 at 02:42 AM I'm a little torn between rooting for China and rooting for the USA. Good luck to China on the individual diving events whenever Laura Wilkinson is not competing. What happened to the Chinese gymnastics team? I was expecting them to do well after their performance in Sydney. It will be a major embarrassment if they fell off the bars in front of the home crowd in 2008. Quote

skylee Posted August 20, 2004 at 02:45 PM Report Posted August 20, 2004 at 02:45 PM At last, HK has managed to get a place on the medals chart. The HK team will play against the China team tomorrow. What a thrill. I suppose if HK wins we still get the Chinese National Anthem. Read -> Table Tennis - Men's Doubles Semifinal: China, Hong Kong advance Quote
