So i thought i heard 'qi zi' when the man offered to open the wine bottle. i told him i had one at home and left. but i did wonder what the 'wife' had to do with the scene. so maybe i misheard some part of the conversation. what is the best word for 'corkscrew'?

From skylee's link, you can see that there are two main types of 開瓶器: 啤酒杯開瓶器 and 紅酒開瓶器. So if it's not obvious which type you are talking about, you should use the whole phrase 紅酒開瓶器.

haha~ "corkscrew" pronounced "qǐ zi"(起子), it's more colloquial than "开瓶器"

"wife" pronounced "qī zi"(妻子), they are a little bit different.

啤酒杯開瓶器

That's not right. Not sure what the best name for this would be. Maybe 啤酒開瓶器 or 汽水開瓶器

I asked a bartender in Taiwan once, she said it's called 開瓶器. I forgot what we were trying to open at the time, I think it was wine.
