Anyone know the etymology for the word 宿醉 ("hangover")? According to Wenlin, 宿 can mean "to stay overnight" (住宿) and "long-standing" (宿愿 - "long-cherished wish"), amongst other things. Taking this into account, can someone please explain how one of the meanings (which either it is) connects with 醉 ("drunk")? Cheers.

this is what the 教育部 dictionary says:

隔夜的。如:「宿雨」、「宿醉」。鏡花緣˙第四回:「睡到黎明,宿酒已消。」

宿(su) has another pronunciation siu, that means overnight, eg: 你一宿都没有回来。

so 宿 and 醉 together mean a status that someone drunk too much to awake overnight.
