You may be right

Personal, but limited, experience.

but Southern Indian movies in four major southern Indian languages are a success, seriously competing with Hindi-based Bollywood.

Very true, but I would hate watching Amitabh Bachchan being dubbed in Tamil even more than being exposed to any original version. Can you imagine a girl watching Shahrukh Khan speaking in any other language than Hindi and not protesting?
