Went for a physical exam earlier this month for the purpose of my Z-visa. I know I should be satisfied being in good health,164cm and 51kg. However, "好女不过百" keeps haunting me as a lot of my Chinese friends are working towards it/trying their best to maintain it. I feel like a bad woman not even trying to get my weight below 50kg.

How do you feel about 好女不过百? Do you try to be 好女不过百 (if you are female)?

I try but always fail. Muscle weighs more than fat is my excuse and besides food tastes too good. It is better to be curvy.

Joke aside, there is some truth in the fact that muscle weighs more. Chinese girls dont tend to do exercises that tone them up musclewise (apart from that girl who just won some weightlifting event of course).

I am 166cm and 54-55kg. I would really love to get to 50kg. But I suspect I would look so different (which is exactly the point) that I wouldn't look that good. Many years ago my weight dropped near 50kg and everybody asked me if I was all right.

It is very difficult to lose those few kg. And 50kg is like 110 pounds. To get below 100 pounds one has to be like 45kg (?). Or perhaps that 100 refers to 市斤 rather than pounds?

Yes, I think that this is the case.

In any case, 50kg is a dangerous weight for many girls out there. Not everybody can reach it and be healthy.

I'm about 156 cm and about 54 kg. 50 kg has also been my goal for a long time because it is on the lower end of my BMI, but as long as I'm healthy I'm fine with my weight.

Besides, everyone compliments me on how I have junk in the trunk, and if I lost too much weight there would be no curves. As long as you are healthy and fit, you don't need to worry! When I look at many Chinese girls, a lot of them seem like scarily skinny sticks without any curves. It's not attractive at all.

It's all about the clothes that one wears.

No wonder that some people look ugly when they go below a certain weight when they wear clothes supposed to be worn by fatter people, especially westerners will have trouble with that, because most of clothes made for the european/usa market just won't work for skinny people.

I love big brands like Armani, Hugo Boss etc, but they just don't fit that good (yes, even when bought in Asia, most time an S will be ok for me, but never fits as good as I'd like too, especially jackets/blazers are always way too big), and I'm about 168cm and 60kg (I'm a man), so I can still drop more than 5 kgs without worrying about being underweight.

I would really suggest skinny people to look into asian fashion, becasue it works really well with thin people, it can add some volume in the right places taking away the skinny look.

Most thin people who have that uhealthy look of a walking stick are wearing the wrong clothes.

I don't mean to tell people to get very skinny, but I think 50 kg is perfectly ok for a woman.

It seems to me that there is a consensus that Asian body types are just different from Western ones. For example, the body mass index cut-off for being overweight is 23 for Asian body types, compared to 25 for Western ones.

At 50kg, my bmi would hit 15.8, which is "severely underweight". I doubt it would be very healthy.

So you failed your Z visa physical by 1 kg? Guess the visa standards are really tough these days.

Good one! LOL... I am sure one can go as much as they like above 50kg, and still be approved for the Z-visa as long as they are not affected by diseases deemed harmful by the Chinese govt.

The rule of thumb for the ideal weight used to be your height in centimeters minus 110.

I heard that too... for roughly estimating ideal weight

Yes the cut-off for being overweight is 23 for asian women and 24 for asian men (I read before somewhere). The cut-off of underweight is 18 for asian adults, 18.5 for western adults.

If you are a woman, you must be tall to have a BMI of 15.8 if you are 50kg. At 164cm, my BMI would be about 19 at 50kg. The lowest healthy weight I can be is 48kg (BMI of 18 )

Couldn't agree more :) In China, a woman who is about 50kg is most likely wearing M size clothing... so I think 50kg is a good size here.

True, the older I get the less I care about my weight (even though I do still care). As people get older they are more worried about health than weight. Being almost a quarter century old, I am happy with 51kg. If I were a teen, I would definitely get it under 50kg (luckily I have always been under 50kg in my teens so I never worried back then).

Yes, it's 市斤.

i think a girl looks a lot more healthy with a little bit of weight on. so with your height i think around 51 kg is perfect. could even stand to put on a couple more kgs.

Yes. And apparently you can enjoy BMI as high as 27 and will still be consider healthy if you are Polynesian. As an Asian I must say that this is not fair! :tong

Honestly, everyone is built differently and without pictures its impossible to tell. My old girlfriend was shorter and weighed 45 kg, she put an extra kg on ballooned up(so i had to dump her:D). But, I've met several girls who looked very very good and were in the mid 50's, just because of different builds

With 164 cm you can easily be a bit heavier and still be fine. It's not that healthy to be very skinny, and it doesn't necessarily look that good either.

who cares about the 5kg difference

now thats what matters! :D

yer its interesting, many of the girls I've met in China (Shanghai) seem to see 50kg as the defining point between fat and slim. Some are even saying 45kg is too big. I haven't seen such a focal point of attention back in Australia. I am 65kg... (though I am guy )
