sagilogo1 Posted December 12, 2009 at 01:53 PM Report Posted December 12, 2009 at 01:53 PM 若要 = in order to "In order to achieve one's goal, one has to work hard" 若要达到目标,就得努力工作 But I havent found 若要 in any dictionary.. so is 若 a stand-alone word? I think there are more words that begin with 若 and are also not listed. So it there a pattern here that I am missing? Thanks Quote
anonymoose Posted December 12, 2009 at 02:03 PM Report Posted December 12, 2009 at 02:03 PM 若 is just another way of saying 如果, but is usually used in written rather than spoken Chinese. So your sentence could also be rephrased as: 如果要达到目标,就得努力工作 and could be translated as something like: If one is to reach one's goal, one must work hard Quote

Lim_zhao Posted December 14, 2009 at 01:42 AM Report Posted December 14, 2009 at 01:42 AM For my view, "若要" is shorter for "若是需要“ or "假如需要”。 In Chinese words, we can see many words like this, so it is difficult to understand for foreigners who are studying Chinese. It is similar to English meaning"provided". Quote
analgesia Posted December 15, 2009 at 02:27 AM Report Posted December 15, 2009 at 02:27 AM Ok,I only make things easier, 若= If 若要= If ( you) want ( to) See the difference Quote
