gegehuhu Posted December 22, 2009 at 02:11 PM Report Posted December 22, 2009 at 02:11 PM Today my tutor and I were discussing movie genres. But she drew a blank when we came to genre, which is, in my opinion, one of the main genres of movies. After checking the dictionary, there doesn't seem to be any direct translation. All the words for drama seem to apply to staged theatre. But I'm looking for the word that describes the genre of drama as applied to contemporary cinema. So what do I say in Chinese? One term my friend suggested was 文艺片, which translates literally as "arts and literature films" but which I might more loosely translate as "artsy films" or "serious films". Is this the word I'm looking for, or is there something else out there? Quote

gegehuhu Posted December 22, 2009 at 03:23 PM Author Report Posted December 22, 2009 at 03:23 PM I see a literal translation would have 剧情片 as "plot film" or "story line film". I guess what distinguishes drama from other genres is that the plot is more central to the film's value. I'll see if my tutor recognizes this as a distinct genre. Thanks. Quote
