natra Posted December 23, 2009 at 09:42 PM Report Posted December 23, 2009 at 09:42 PM I am currently reading《红楼梦》in the original. Recently, my professor recommended that I buy an annotated version of the text. That way, I could read a bit faster with less common idioms getting glossed in a footnote at the bottom. The text she had in her office and recommended I pick up was this version: http://www.amazon.cn/mn/detailApp/ref=sr_1_1?_encoding=UTF8&s=books&qid=1261604470&asin=B0011BQ240&sr=8-1 However, it seems to be out of print. Could anyone here recommend a similar version with 注解? Quote

natra Posted December 24, 2009 at 01:20 AM Author Report Posted December 24, 2009 at 01:20 AM Okay. I ordered a copy. My professor seemed to not have a very clear idea of the differences between different annotated versions, so I assume that as long as it gives me some basic explanation in the footnotes then it should not really matter. Kenny同志 Posted December 24, 2009 at 01:25 AM Report Posted December 24, 2009 at 01:25 AM its doesn't have footnotes, but there are Pinyin and explanations of some hard words along the lines Quote
natra Posted December 24, 2009 at 01:44 AM Author Report Posted December 24, 2009 at 01:44 AM ... Well, hopefully it will contain basically the same information as the other one. Quote
Kenny同志 Posted December 24, 2009 at 04:52 AM Report Posted December 24, 2009 at 04:52 AM (edited) The suggested one is a red hardback. Though inexpensive, in terms of readability and layout, it is much better than most of its counterparts;the notes it provides even enable an average reader to slide through the masterpiece. Click "章节试读" under the picture of the book to see if you like it. Edited December 24, 2009 at 05:09 AM by kenny2006woo Quote
gato Posted December 24, 2009 at 05:10 AM Report Posted December 24, 2009 at 05:10 AM You could also consider the version published by 少年儿童出版社. Though it's an illustrated edition, it does have the full text, in 4 volumes. The annotations are likely to be more extensive because this edition is intended for young readers. I've skimmed through them in a local stores, and they look very good. The rest of the Four Classics (Water Margin, Journey to the West, Romance of the Three Kingdoms) are also available in this format from 少年儿童出版社.

natra Posted December 24, 2009 at 04:01 PM Author Report Posted December 24, 2009 at 04:01 PM Ah, okay. Yes, I would say that this is more or less the same as what my professor recommended. As for the illustrated version, I will consider it, but it is really not what I am looking for. Quote
rob07 Posted December 27, 2009 at 06:01 AM Report Posted December 27, 2009 at 06:01 AM I read and can recommend this one: http://shop.kongfz.com/book/8325/55816345.html It is published by the 教育部 for Chinese 中学生. The footnotes don't feel intrusive but as well as explaining rare characters and phrases, they also cover customs (for example, the rules of the drinking games they play) and historical and cultural references. I found it very helpful. I've got no experience with ordering from that site though, I only found it by googling the ISBN. Quote
