Renting My Own Place - Can my visiting friends stay there as well?

I rent my own apartment and I want to host my families and friends when they are visiting China ( 1 - 2 week stay), can I do that right away or is there any permit that I should get first?

In most countries I've been to, I can do that right away without asking for anyone's permission (not even the landlord) - nobody would even care as long as we are not making tantrums, but this is China so I figure the red tape involved can be daunting.

I've done it without any paperwork or special permission for short periods of time.

But after about a week, it suddenly occurs to me to remind my guests that it is highly illegal and extremely dangerous and they need to leave immediately.

Technically you should register them with the neighborhood PSB.
