He didn't know anything about it, and neither did the library, but he believed it to be pigskin which the figure is made out of. Any help translating the characters on the box would be helpful, but if you know what the art might be I would love to learn more about it. It's “金箔工艺画” in simplfied chinese which means an artistic painting made by gold foil,it should be a high-end gift from Chinese,the figure in the painting is the Longivity god in Chinese culture.
