JimW Posted August 21, 2004 at 03:12 AM Report Posted August 21, 2004 at 03:12 AM I'm using Mandrake 10.0. Does anyone know of a linux app available that will convert Hanzi to piniyin? Preferably both GB and Big5. . Thanks, JimW Quote
asharpe Posted August 21, 2004 at 03:33 AM Report Posted August 21, 2004 at 03:33 AM I just found a web page that will do this; it may be too clumsy for your use, though: http://www.popjisyo.com/WebHint/Portal_e.aspx. I use Linux as well, and the only other thing I have found is a java app called dimsum. It annotates a web page, putting the pinyin above the hanzi. I've had some trouble with it, but it does sort-of work. I don't remember where I found it, but if you'd like, I can make it accessible to you from my web page. Quote
JimW Posted August 22, 2004 at 01:52 AM Author Report Posted August 22, 2004 at 01:52 AM The URL you gave doesn't work, but by searching Google, I foiund this: http://www.popjisyo.com/WebHint/Portal.aspx However, the main page is in Japanese. When I go to the English version, there's no real instruction about how to do anything. I had noticed Dim Sum before, though I hadn't really tried to do anything with it. I'm not looking to convert Websites, though, just texts. I wonder if that will work? Thanks, Jim Quote
geek_frappa Posted August 22, 2004 at 04:17 PM Report Posted August 22, 2004 at 04:17 PM njstar 5.0 word processor.... will convert to either pinyin with numbers or tone marks... http://www.njstar.com/ Quote
JimW Posted August 22, 2004 at 06:58 PM Author Report Posted August 22, 2004 at 06:58 PM But NJStar won't work on linux. On the other hand, I did find , on Erik Petersen's page, http://www.mandarintools.com/ an Annotater. It's a bit slow to use, because it can only accept a limited section of text at a time, but it is some help. If anyone else has any other useful ssites to look at, I'd appreciate hearing about them. Thanks Jim Quote
benotnobody Posted September 5, 2004 at 12:58 AM Report Posted September 5, 2004 at 12:58 AM Concerning NJStar Chinese Word Processor... You could always try and run it under WINE or some other Windows emulator; or we could petition NJStar until they release Linux versions of their software. Quote
JimW Posted October 25, 2004 at 11:31 PM Author Report Posted October 25, 2004 at 11:31 PM Okay, I got DimSum up and working, then, after a long stay in hospital, I'm back. DimSum works nicely, but, never being satisfied, does anyone know of anything, useable on Linux, that could convert hanzi to jyutpin? Jim W Quote
trevelyan Posted November 9, 2004 at 07:33 PM Report Posted November 9, 2004 at 07:33 PM *cough* http://www.adsotrans.com/advanced.html Outputs tone marks or numbers. Powered by a 117,000 word dictionary that is user-edited and downloadable. Open source. The online version supports guobiao and unicode. If you download it you will need to convert non-guobiao files to GB2313 first. The GNU program iconv will do this and comes standard with most distributions. If you use it a lot just write a batch-file. iconv -f BIG5 -t GB2313 -o [output_file] [input_file] Theoretically, the program should be able to handle any file -- I haven't tried it with non-text ones though. fourthring Posted November 20, 2004 at 12:19 AM Report Posted November 20, 2004 at 12:19 AM The adotrans site is really cool. Thanks! I have been looking for something like that for a long time. Quote
bluepoppy Posted November 29, 2004 at 10:21 PM Report Posted November 29, 2004 at 10:21 PM I just downloaded the treeware version of the poptrans software, which works offline. Maybe they updated the English site since you guys last looked because it's working now Quote
