I will be using Mandarin for business mostly, I work in the Aerospace Industry and will eventually be traveling to China in the next year for business, I know of many American businessmen who have been to China for business and did not take the time to even learn the basics of Mandarin or the Chinese business culture and most did not fare to well. I on the other hand have heard and read time and time again that it is much more easier to do business in China when you can speak Mandarin and know the social and business culture, you are more respected, and more trustworthy to the Chinese, especially in business when they see that you have taken the time to learn their culture and language, even if not completely fluent you have shown ambition and courtesy to them and they are more apt to doing business with us.

I have heard this time and again from my Chinese instructors and other businessmen who have travelled to China in the past, them saying they wish they had taken the time to at least learn some basics, they were lazy and the Chinese saw it first hand.

I have only been studying for 4 months and I enjoy it, it is quite hard and challenging but also quite rewarding. I am also fascinated with Chinese culture and history and have been for many years so this all fits into my learning much easier and enjoyable.

Chinese language is very useful. Especially in our country (third world country), it has been an edge for me when I was still searching for a job after I have finished my bachelor's degree in Chinese Langauge (China, Huaqiao University). It will give you a lot of opportunities since you are considered as a multi-lingual in your country.
