Renting a room in Shanghai - not a whole apartment

I am thinking about renting one room either near Shanghai nanzhan or near the center of Pudong - yes, I know there is a big difference in location. All of the typical expat sites lead me to options that co$t a lot of $. Are there any sites that are used by local people? Also, if someone has experience doing this are there suggestions you have as to how to make this successful, what works, what is important, etc.? I would like to spend no more than 1,000 rmb

Briefly:

1. The best way to find a place is to hit the pavement. Stay at a hostel/hotel for a week. Walk around, find a neighborhood you like, and drop into the small local real-estate agencies.

2. An alternative might be to put up a 求合租 (wanting joint-rental) ad on the physical/virtual bulletin boards (BBS) that exist at all universities. For RMB 1000 you could probably get your own room in a multi-room apartment. I can't recommend any universities in central Pudong; by Nanzhan, maybe 上师大 or 华东理工大学.

Both of these require decent Chinese.
