chrix Posted February 8, 2010 at 04:38 PM Report Posted February 8, 2010 at 04:38 PM Aw come on, renzhe, isn't calling ABBA "harmless bubble gum" a little bit too harsh? Besides Roxette, they're the best thing Sweden ever gave the world (and they're still trying to forget Ace of Base) Quote
renzhe Posted February 8, 2010 at 05:40 PM Report Posted February 8, 2010 at 05:40 PM They are quality bubble gum! No doubt! I'm not saying that they were bad! But very mainstream and mother-compatible. There's a big difference between them and the Dead Kennedys "Dancing Queen" instead of "Down with the government". Quote
tooironic Posted February 8, 2010 at 07:27 PM Report Posted February 8, 2010 at 07:27 PM Besides Roxette, they're the best thing Sweden ever gave the world You kiddin'? Sweden have been at the forefront of indie/alternative music for the past decade, spawning some pretty awesome acts like The Knife / Fever Ray, Lykke Li, Miike Snow, Miss Li, Robyn, Peter Bjorn and John, Röyksopp, Slagsmålsklubben, The Tough Alliance, Juvelen, Kleerup, etc, etc... clevermae Posted February 22, 2010 at 08:46 AM Report Posted February 22, 2010 at 08:46 AM How about songs by Lady Gaga? Aren't they big in China? Quote
daofeishi Posted February 23, 2010 at 03:43 AM Report Posted February 23, 2010 at 03:43 AM ...Röyksopp... They're Norwegian Quote
miss_China_so_much Posted February 23, 2010 at 11:09 AM Report Posted February 23, 2010 at 11:09 AM Here are a few that I know: 1. Try to remember the kind of September: sung by Li Ming (黎明) in City of Glass (玻璃之城), originally from musical 2. Dream Person, sung by Faye Wong, originally sung by the Cranberries Quote
liuzhou Posted February 23, 2010 at 11:29 AM Report Posted February 23, 2010 at 11:29 AM How about songs by Lady Gaga? Aren't they big in China? A quick straw poll of around 40 Chinese young friends I happened to be with earlier today suggests that 100% have never heard of her / him / it. Quote
Daan Posted February 23, 2010 at 12:56 PM Report Posted February 23, 2010 at 12:56 PM They may not have heard the name Lady Gaga, but I heard their song Poker Face a bit too much for my own liking when I was in Beijing. Quote
renzhe Posted February 23, 2010 at 02:04 PM Report Posted February 23, 2010 at 02:04 PM A month ago I was in Thailand, and Lady Gaga was all over the radio. Don't know how it is in China nowadays, I haven't visited in a while (I have to plan another trip.... ) Quote
wedge Posted February 24, 2010 at 03:03 AM Report Posted February 24, 2010 at 03:03 AM I live in Hong Kong and go to Taipei alot. It seems like nearly every establishment that caters to young people -- bars, clubs, malls, trendy apparel shops, hair salons, eateries -- all have the exact same US top 40/pop playlist. It's a neverending stream of Lady Gaga, Akon, Black-eyed Peas, Jay Sean, etc. I don't mind because I like that kind of music. Quote
