Quest Posted August 22, 2004 at 06:36 PM Report Posted August 22, 2004 at 06:36 PM http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5788776/ Everyone was talking about how unfair the referee was, and the truth has been unfolded. The referee gave Italy all the ambiguous points, where as 6 of them were mistakes, and China should have won in the 42:45 fencing match against Italy. The referee has been fired, but it is already too late to change the results. too bad for China... but read the Italians' comments, they should be ashamed of what they have said and what they have done... everytime they lost a point, they sat on the floor to express childish anger and to drag time (very "gentlemen" like) the referee should have warned them, but needless to say he didn't. chengdude Posted August 23, 2004 at 01:36 PM Report Posted August 23, 2004 at 01:36 PM No doubt about it, the Italian fencer Vanni was alternately insufferably arrogant and childishly petulant, but unlike the gymnastics fiasco in which the wrong starting score was assigned before the South Korean's routine (thus affecting the math of the final score), the mistakes in fencing were committed during the flow of the matches, which gives the Italians room to wriggle: they can always argue that their fencers might have changed their strategy or reactions over the course of the match had the disputed points been given to the Chinese. The Chinese know, then, that they have to swallow the injustice as given this variable (however tenuous), there is no way to conclusively argue in hindsight that they would have won if the erroneous calls went their way. Perhaps in Buddhist Hell, the Hungarian judge will be condemned to the endless jabs of a sharpened sabre. Quote
