jbradfor Posted February 11, 2010 at 02:49 PM Report Share Posted February 11, 2010 at 02:49 PM Bump. No one knows? I'm really curious myself, I don't recognize that script at all. Is it even Chinese, and I just don't recognize that cursive style?
renzhe Posted February 11, 2010 at 03:21 PM Report Share Posted February 11, 2010 at 03:21 PM I've never seen anything like it.

Lu Posted February 11, 2010 at 03:55 PM Report Share Posted February 11, 2010 at 03:55 PM Is it even Chinese? Where did you get the pottery?
prostreetgmc Posted February 11, 2010 at 11:33 PM Author Report Share Posted February 11, 2010 at 11:33 PM I got it at an auction, i'm not 100% sure its Chinese, some folks that have seen it in person, say it looks like Chinese. Here are some other photos of the side. These look like older China figures.
renzhe Posted February 11, 2010 at 11:51 PM Report Share Posted February 11, 2010 at 11:51 PM They look a little bit like cursive Chinese characters at a glance, but it doesn't look like any writing style I've seen and some of the strokes simply look odd. None of them actually looks like it is a proper character. I don't think that it's Chinese
Kenny同志 Posted February 12, 2010 at 02:16 AM Report Share Posted February 12, 2010 at 02:16 AM Clearly paintings on the pottery is Chinese style. It is highly likely that these characters are 甲骨文.
roddy Posted February 12, 2010 at 02:32 AM Report Share Posted February 12, 2010 at 02:32 AM What makes me think it's just squiggles is the way all the characters are so similar and the way they're arranged. The four enclosed on two or three sides are all in the middle of the four edges, the 'open' ones on the corners and center. What are the chances of that happening in actual text. The 3x3 configuration also seems unlikely, and while there are differences between the characters it looks to me more like variations by whoever's copied them or made them up. They might be meant to look Chinese, but I'll be surprised if they are*. *I am, however, frequently surprised.
jbradfor Posted February 12, 2010 at 03:53 AM Report Share Posted February 12, 2010 at 03:53 AM Not knowing what Oracle bone script looks like, I headed over to the wikipedia article. At least for the examples provided in that article, oracle bone script looks nothing like the pictures here.
Daan Posted February 13, 2010 at 04:33 AM Report Share Posted February 13, 2010 at 04:33 AM I'm not an expert either, but I've seen quite a bit of 甲骨文 in books and in museums. This looks nothing like it to me.
trien27 Posted February 13, 2010 at 05:07 AM Report Share Posted February 13, 2010 at 05:07 AM For the first picture, I'd say it's not Chinese, but rather a cursive script of some language but have no clue what language it's supposed to be. It might be based on Chinese or not, like Jurchen or Khitan or Tangut, etc....?! I got it at an auction, i'm not 100% sure its Chinese, some folks that have seen it in person, say it looks like Chinese. Here are some other photos of the side. It is "zhuan shu" but I have no clue whether it's "da zhuan" or "xiao zhuan" until closer inspection, with magnification, of course.
Daan Posted February 13, 2010 at 09:09 AM Report Share Posted February 13, 2010 at 09:09 AM I don't think it's Tangut script or anything like that either, if only because of what roddy pointed out: it's just two characters, one of which is repeated four times, the other one repeated six times.
